Line for one handed spey casts?

In particular I have been tying to transfer some of the casts I have learned in spey casting to use with the one hander. I have found this to be quite useful this fall while fishing streamers. Any advice for line choices- wt foward or double taper? Brands? I am using a Greys 10 ft 3 wt (which I think does well in this application) Not looking for a micro spey line or anything just a line good for roll casting type stuff. Thanks.

I use my 10 foot 5 weight in the application that you are mentioning. I don't think that the Greys rod will perform as you expect it will. I will say that the Greys is an excellent rod for traditional casting. I like the usual GPX or the RIO Selective Trout taper. I am not sure if the RIO line that I mentioned comes in the 3 weight though. I know that the GPX goes. You might want to give that line a try.

I would recommend staying away from extreme weight forward tapers, such as the Cortland Precision Trout or Rio Gold. You can spey cast these lines, but the taper configuration is made for overhead casting with fast action rods or bigger flies.

I would also recommend staying away from the Triangle Taper configurations. Although these lines work great for spey casts, they do not turn over heavy rigs or streamers very well since the tip end is tapered down so fine.

Like Aaron said, the Rio Selective Trout taper works well. I like the Cortland Precision Platinum, and that works great too.

Most any Double Taper fly line will produce satisfactory results as well.

Re: Line for one handed spey casts?

I have experimented with two handed rods for about 10 years. The spey casts normally use +2 line weights over the rod recommended single hand wt. For your 10ft 3wt, I would begin with a long belly 5wt line, I like the Rio Nymph line for this type of casting. The softer 10ft rod will most likely be excellent for spey casting.

Google the "Turbo Spey Cast" this was invented by Simon Gawesworth of Rio. The first half of the Loop video shows this technique, the second half demos two handed casting with a single handed rod. You hold the rod blank above the cork and the 10ft rod will duplicate spey casting.

They make specific line for under handing,Opti Creek Comes in 3wt,cost $115 little steep if you ask me.. I don't know how your going to throw streamers on a 3wt but thats another story. Acording to anglersworkshop, airflo 40 plus is supposed to be a great underhanding line too but the line starts at the 5wt mark.. I just usually wing it with my fw gpx and throw in a haul for some added line speed..
