    Flies that work sometimes - Improve your fly tying technique with Photography

    Here are a couple of ties I used in Montana after I got sick of the toothy Browns chewing up my pheasant tails .




    I thought I did a good job on the fly with the black bead head until I saw the fly full screen after I photographed it. I noticed three errors .One there was a gap in the wire wrap .Two the thorax on the black fly was poorly constructed .Three the tail is to long.

    I have an easy and inexpensive way to take fly photos with a point and shoot camera.

    It's not my method and I owe a debt of gratitude to Bruce Norikane to use his adaptation fo a drink cup. My cup is a drink cup from Sam's Club.

    I take my cup, the electrical clip and my camera with me to fly tying events. I can use my tying lamp to take photos of other tyer's flies.

    Here's a hand held photo I took just the other day of a fly I tied. It is an upside down fly that rides hook point up, so flip the image over and that's how the fly rides in the water.
