    Re: Anyone for carp fishing

    Davy,

I heard in Europe the Carp is a highly respected game fish and I've also hear that some Europeans travel to the US just to fish for the Carp, any truth to this?

    Justin,

I can answer this one, as my folks were both born in Europe and came here in the 50s. My father and I were pretty serious carp fishermen when I was younger, and this tradition derives from his childhood in France. In our part of France, you can still see photos in the local newpaper of people with 3 or 4lb carp trophies. Our best carp was an 18lb fish from Indian Well State Park on the lower Housatonic. We used to fish with corn and worms.

In the mid-70s, my paternal grandfather came to visit one summer. He taught my Dad how to fish in the small streams of pre and post-WWII France. They fished for carp, dace and creek chubs. Anyway, we took him to fish the Quinnipiac River drainage in Wallingford, CT for carp. We had a huge, banner day, landing in excess of two dozen large carp. He was amazed at the productivity of American waters! It is a memory I will always cherish. We kept a few of the fish and ate them (not sure if I would now).

I know on the St. Lawrence River there is a hard core carp angling fraternity, and I believe it is popular for overseas fishermen to visit there.

Carp anglers in the UK are fanatics, way more so than trout fly anglers.
If they knew the resources we have here for what are termed as trash fish they would go nuts.

If you fly guys think you are paying high end for gear think again. Specialist rods in the UK can cost $3000 or more bucks, couple that with the electronics they use, sophisticated baits and hooks and all else. Big time expenses.

And get this, those guys will often camp by a water for weeks on end after one elusive trophy carp known to live in that water.
I have never meet a trout fly angler who would do same.

Carp are also a very valuable fish there, poaching takes place not to catch fish to eat, but to sell them as live fish.
A 20 lb carp is worth 100s of bucks. Before you think it, we cannot send carp to the UK due to transfer of diseases found here which the carp carry.

There is also a place in France well known for trophy size Carp, l forget the name rigth now. Anglers from the Uk go there to try and catch one of the 50 lb plus fish.
