Everything you have heard is true. No lights at all. The darker the night the better. It is true for fresh and salt. For trout, big streamers and nymphs.

You should only fish an area that you know intimately. If you have any fear about being out in the woods in pitch darkness, don't go! At night, you will imagine things moving behind every tree. Lots of animals move at night, especially beavers. A mother beaver with her family is not to be trifled with. I have done most of my night fishing in the ocean so far, but know many people (on this forum) that fish for trout at night. Our resident expert Tony's handle is "nightfisher," and I know Aaron has had some great experiences night fishing.
