Although higher than normal and marginally fishable for wade anglers, the Housy has surprising clarity, and the Hendricksons are hatching. We had two guided floats go out today, and two wade trips. Overall, slow on the trout but fair to excellent on the Smallmouth. Not surprisingly, the guys in the boats did the best, with the more experienced 2 nailing 20+ good sized Smallies and 2 nice browns. Plenty of short strikes on streamers out of the boats, and some big trout were rolled but didn't actually take the fly. With the high flows, not many trout rising at all, but this will change as flows come down over the week. We didn't get a lot of rain like other parts of CT & NY did, only maybe a couple of 1/2" shots over the past few days, so I expect the flow to start to drop again by later Saturday(it's already dropping up in Great Barrington), and keep receding during the rest of the week- get ready! Hendrickson spinner falls should be going by next week, and as the flow comes down you should see fish feeding on them in the slower pools. For you true diehards venturing out this weekend, fish medium to large nymphs & streamers off the current seams near the banks in the pools. Don't go jumping in before you fish the edges or you will spook all the catchable trout. Look for the fishing to really take off as flow drop down near the 1,500cfs mark- it's much easier to wade fish from that level and below, as well as easier to read the river. At 2,000cfs+, if you don't know the river it starts to get hard to tell the riffles, runs & pools apart- it looks like the fish could be anywhere, but they are usually in specific spots that only experience (or a guide!) can show you. This is where people like Aaron are invaluable, with specific local knowledge. Caddis will be starting up in about a week or so, it will get crazy then. And as the flow drops, clears and warms more, the trout will really start to hammer streamers- that usually gets really, really good sometime in the first week of May or so Good luck to all venturing out, we are about to head into "prime time" on the Housy. The annual stocking by the state will take place on Thursday, May 3rd- 9,000 browns are going in, from 6-12". We privately put in (with a permit from the DEP and their blessing) 500 13-15" 'bows below the TMA about 2 weeks ago.
