What colors and sizes do you guys use in CJ's? What type of bead? Anyone fish them beadless?

    Re: Copper John

I just started tying CJ's at the end of the summer. I've been tying them in black, red, copper, and I just got some dull moss green colored wire that I'm anxious to try. JB also suggests double colors. . ..usually green with black, intertwined. I can't get that smooth-finished wrap yet with the copper. . .I need to tie a few hundred to perfect them ;D. I've been using black beads, and I haven't yet tried any without a beadhead.

The black Copper Johns do work well here in the East on occasion. I also caught quite a few fish on Copper Johns on the SOuth Holston last summer, mostly in small sizes.

When I was out West a few year ago I had to try the "Copper Dropper" and to my amazement those stupid trout out there ate it. If only that worked as well at the West Branch/ Delaware we would have some easy days ;D

    Re: Copper John

I have had success in the plain copper and chartreuse wires. The CJ can be tricky to tie, and time-consuming, but it sinks like no other. Here are two tying tips: (1) Use the XS wire on an even thread underbody. It's easier to build a smooth layer with 8/0 thread. (2) Aaron recommends using UV Knot Sense in place of the epoxy. I just bought this product, but have not tried it. It cures with ultraviolet light from the Sun, or correct wavelength flashlight. It cures in seconds. Hope this helps.

The UV Knot Sense is a great product, I use it with the UV Power Light, by Loon Products, the material will harden in seconds.

Works for both for line/leader knots and fly tying applications.
