Catching Stockers

First off let start by saying I am very new to fly fishing. Started a few years ago on Steelhead on the Erie Tribs. I thought I was pretty good at this fly fishing stuff until I started on the trout. Sure ain't like dunken power bait. I have gotten up to PA a few times and fish Spring and Penns creek and catch a few most days. However I live in MD and usually am just fishing stockers. I catch a few here and thre but just can't seem to have those days that you love to remember. Any help on flys to use and technique would be appreciated. I fished Antitiem Creek to day right after it was stocked. I managed 3 on a crystal meth and that was it.

I would nymph, as I see is the case.

As far as water types, try to find slow steady current that is around three feet deep... just like the hatchery tank. It's the type of water that they are used to. It takes the trout a fair amount of time to spread around and start holding in water that is shallower with faster current. Also, do not neglect midges. Midges hatch in the hatcheries and stocked fish know what they are. Small flashy stuff can work great on new fish. Also, small streamers can work great at times, but fish become numb to it after a few minutes of it.

Wow, I never thought of that. But it really makes sense. Small midge type nymphs do well on many stockers and I always thought that they wouldn't know what they were ... but what Aaron said makes a lot of sense. ~ yet another great "nugget!"

I'll have to give that a try. I know a guy that fishes them for stockers in small lakes but not in streams.
