I am considering this line on a 5wt switch rod for larger rivers. Wondering what your opinion would be for it in that application.
Just bought a new line the two tone Gold line. I was hoping for a good all purpose line but I have to say its not what I was told in the shop or expected. I use a 4wt about 40% of the time and my old Cortland 444 was junk after about 7 seasons. I wanted a line that would do it all ok...not great but ok...and this thing feels like a shooting head. While nymphing it was good...but then again you dont notice it because of the weighted flys. A midge hatch started sunday afternoon on the platte and I was casting into a back eddy to 3 or 4 good sized fish steadily rising. Got one...but casting a #20 midge on this with a George Harvey 11 ft dry fly leader felt horrible and it was pretty indelicate. I am a very good caster...not bragging but every time I made a cast I felt a semi heavy thunk as the line straightened out...its not the rod or the leader...it felt like a 400 grain shooting head that I used to throw at stripers...actually it felt like a 6wgt line...but the diameter as you looked at it looked pretty much like a 4. I guess if this is the gold line I would not recommend it for any sort of delicate fishing...its actually the first line I ever bought that I really didnt like at all.
update(3-20) I shouldnt say I dont like it at all, it is actually a good nymphing line. I was expecting something a little more versatile and had switched over from the Cortland 444. Its a very good floating line for nymphing or larger drys. Bought the LT on Wednesday and its a really nice line. Drys cast well and it handled my nymph rigs decently. I will probably put the gold on a long stick for strictly nymphing and keep the LT on the current 4 weight for general and dry fly setups.

"Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after."
In my opinion its a good nymph/streamer line. I dont know much about switch rods but I assume you will be doing alot of distance casting/fishing with streamers etc. If that is the case I think this might be a good rod for that. The one thing I would just not want it for is presenting dry flys with a normal length leader.
Thanks. I was thinking of going with Windcutter originally and then got wind of the idea of going with a steelhead line. The taper on Rio Gold comes close to the steelhead tapers. If anyone has an opinion on which may mend best I'm listening.

the easiest mending line will be the one with the longest belly/head...and assuming you are doing some distance fishing you really want a long belly line. its really tough to mend the thicker section of line with running line...not enough mass. a double taper line will cast pretty damn good and be the best mending line you could ask for.
