Re: No Tuck with the Euro Techniques & Drag Free Drifts

My 2 cents: I think my drifts are the same no matter split or euro. I never really bought into pulling the flies with the czech nymph as like I said, I fish for the most part the same. I may be missing out though. Just like split, sometimes jigging the fly or stripping it (Iso's) during the drift make a difference. As you found, you can tuck the flies, just have to manipulate the leader.

While euro nymphing for the first time yesterday, I couldn't hardly stop myself from trying to tuck cast the rig. With that much level tippet material at the end it's pretty difficult at first, but after a while I got pretty comfortable with the cast and was able to drive the nymphs in to the water vertically, but couldn't quite get them to turnover and actually tuck underneath.

You need to stop the cast higher on both back cast and forward cast. What is happening is that the nymphs are being cast into the water before they tuck under the cast.

If you will aim your backcast higher and which then allows you to stop the forward cast a bit higher as well, you give the cast more vertical space so that the loop can flip under itself (tuck) before the nymphs hit the water.

Sorry, I thought you were asking about how to tuck.

Re: No Tuck with the Euro Techniques & Drag Free Drifts

    Mantis,

You can tuck cast with the best of them. I will attest to it!

You do tuck cast with the short leader set ups. When and where you do it depends on what you want your flies to do. Fast water, where getting the flies to the bottom, you bet you need to do it.

About the drifting of the flies, When fishing long leader, you are not pulling your flies along at all. They are drifting quite freely. This is where lots of practice comes into play. Yes you will catch lots of fish by moving yout flies along, but the real hammer is dropped on them when you can allow them to drift more naturallly.

With that being said, I get many takes as the flies are descending through the water column, which we know is not the natural behavior of stream insects. This is one benefit to these techniques. With proper technique you can detect takes as the flies are descendng. You are not able to do this with the accuracy of detection with other nymphing methods.

Also, watch the B Water YouTube video.
