Barbless Hook Survey

I was wondering if some of the guys on here might want to help me in a little research. I use mostly barbless hooks as most of you know. However, there are some hook profiles that can't be matched with a barbless hook. Most of these styles are with the larger hooks for big nymphs like stoneflies. I was wondering if you could de-barb some of your larger nymphs and try to keep track of how many fish are lost vs. how many are landed after de-barbing the hook. I know that a hook that is designed barbless is important when dealing with small hooks, but I don't think that its as necessary when dealing with larger hooks. I have been keeping somewhat decent records of this and have not lot as many fish as one would think. Would anyone here be willing to de-barb some hooks for the cause?

All hooks that I use are de-barbed...including those that I use for stripers. Happy to keep a log to see if it makes a difference...but I have not seen an appreciable increase in lost fish due to a barbless hook....

easy as stones/vladis tend to be the only hooks I debarb (most other nymphs & dries I can tie on barbless), of course compared with the majority of guys on this site, I'm not getting the sort of fish counts that start to achieve statistical significance. Last season, if I remember correctly, 0% of my stone/vladi hook-ups were lost, but because I didn't get into vladi's until late season '08 and have a unjustified dislike of fishing stones, I was under thirty fish total on those flies all season.

I either de-barb my hooks, or tie on barbless. Today I fished de-barbed hooks from a #8 3xl to a #16 scud hook, and I didn't lose a single fish on them (other than the big ones that hung me up on sticks, but those don't count for this topic ). I cannot say I notice any real difference between most hooks that are manufactured barbless vs. the ones I squeeze the barbs down on myself. I mean some hooks just have a generally better design and/or sharper points, and those ones seem to hook & land more fish- such as the Tiemco 2499SP-BL & Tiemco 2488H.

I have not used barbed hooks for the past 40 years however, all of my hooks have barbs pinched down with pliers. The few times I have joined friends for bass fishing with lures, I also pinch down all the treble hooks,,,,,drives the BASS guys crazy.

The only noticable loss is when an active fish gets closer in to the rod. Expecially Smallmouth and salt water Stripers, that head shake will easily throw a barbless hook. I really do not mind, the fish was destined to be released.
