Nutman,
I have all colors in 2.0-3.8 mm. The only exception are the fl beads where I only use them in 2.0, 2.4 and 2.8mm. As for bead took size that's personal preference. For some flies I like the beads to be over sized and on some flies I like to use the recommended bead size.
I may have said this before, but Charlie Craven's new book has really useful tables for matching beads and weighting wire to hook size. I don't think it is fair to Charlie to reproduce them here. Similar tables are available online. I have been using his recommendations and find that the flies look perfectly proportioned.
For the bright orange beads, I do like the oversized look, and I have seen such flies in the European publications.
Thanks Aaron I was after the sizes for the orange beads so i could get my hands on them to tye up some of these little hot bugs for the spring and maybe even up on the deschutes for trout fishing ,soon . our trout seasons are limited on certain rivers here even though they maybe catch and release . Some are open year round .
The steelheading has been super slow due to cold water so ive been thinking maybe it is time to seach for trout till it rains and warms up a bit .I like fishing but I also like catching once in awhile .
Davy let me know when you have the colored ones in and ill order some from you !!!
Alanb ,what is the name of that book? I totally understand about not giving out charts ,those guys work hard to have a book come out .There are to many books to buy Im after john shewys speys and dees and deck hogans book and a soft hackel book .It is endless .I got some new material for my march browns so ill be sending those to you soon!!! plus its that time .
fish on ,I caught a 100 pound sturgon on 20lb test!
Some common size match-ups in both inches & mm:
#10- 5/32" or 3.8mm
#12- 1/8" or 3.2mm
#14- 7/64" or 2.8mm
#16- 3/32" or 2.4mm
#18- 5/64" or 2.0mm
These are rough guidelines, you can usually go up or down a size if you prefer. If you go on http://www.wflies.com/beads.html, they have a really good chart on there.
A Redneck's last words, "Hold my beer while I do this...."
Here is the size fl. orange beads you want. Straight from Aaron's FOTM "fire fly"

These guys don't like them though. Aaron is right. Not one brown would touch the fire fly.
But then againthese guys will.

Water temp on 2-09-09 was 36.7 at upper TMA Farmington River
Do you guys find it easier to use the slotted beads when oversizing the bead?
Blacklabel: no, you don't need to use the slotted beads. If you need those, you are probably going too large with the bead. I have always found it hard to hide the slot in the bead after tying the fly. The best use for slotted beads is on jig hooks. Slotted beads are a bit heavier than the Cyclops style, but as I said, I don't like the way they look, as sometimes they hang funny and it is hard to cover up the slot.
I got some of the slotted beads at the Somerset show, and do not like them. As you said, Alain, the slot is visible on the completed fly and, also, the bead wants to sit crooked on the hook shank. Not sure if the fish will mind, we'll see.
I spent most of my money on fishing equipment, beer and whiskey, the rest I just wasted.
