"Night Fishing" - trout in the darkness

I have heard all kinds of seemingly mythical stories of anglers catching huge fish after sunset. I am told that the really big trout (especially browns) prefer to feed nocturnally.

I have personally never gone fly fishing in near-zero light conditions.

It seems to make sense to use "noisy" flies that make obvious water disturbances so that the fish can use their lateral line and "hear" your fly offering.

Do any of the forum members have any experience with fishing after dark? Does one fish in complete darkness, or do you set up a small candle or flashlight? Do these lights disturb the fish and affect angling success?

Or is all of this talk about night fishing for lunker trout a crock of BS?

Everything you have heard is true. No lights at all. The darker the night the better. It is true for fresh and salt. For trout, big streamers and nymphs.

Joe Humphreys' books and videos cover this in detail.

You should only fish an area that you know intimately. If you have any fear about being out in the woods in pitch darkness, don't go! At night, you will imagine things moving behind every tree. Lots of animals move at night, especially beavers. A mother beaver with her family is not to be trifled with. I have done most of my night fishing in the ocean so far, but know many people (on this forum) that fish for trout at night. Our resident expert Tony's handle is "nightfisher," and I know Aaron has had some great experiences night fishing.

Many years ago I took a weekend seminar with Joe Humphreys and Ed Shenk. Two of us requested Joe take us out at night and show his methods for catching the huge brown on his book back cover.

I had done some saltwater night fishing but wading in a river in the dark was totally different, Joe emphasized knowing where you are and being familiar with the river bottom. We did not catch anything but it was a great experience. He gave me a sample fly that he used for the large night brown in his book. The key to fly design is disturbance, the trout's lateral line is very efficient at locating underwater vibrations in the dark.

    Night Angler,

I had to ties stillwater flies today with Davy. We were busy doing this till 5. Then we went streamer fishing for a few hours on the White. The streamer bite was good but the hookups were slow! I landed one nice fat brown of abou 19 inches.

The fishing yesterday was insane! We landed tons of bows and cutts to 18 inches! The fish ate Dynamite worms, DW midges and DW sowbugs. Davy has the best sow bug pattern that trout have ever seen! I can vouch for it! So bottom line AR is great and I am having fun!

In my many years experience night time fishing when there is zero light source and when we have very heavy fog is mainly a waste of time.

Browns do have the ability to detect sound and movement, but they also need to sight a target such as as fly, unlike say locating a soft shell crawdad that is inanimate at that time.
The same scenario for sea trout, there has to be some available light source which allows the trouts receptors to see the target, all be it the trouts eye is well adapted to conditions of diminished and little light source.

Regarding many of my DW range of special fly patterns, they will be available soon for you guys who want to obtain them. I need to get some pictorials up on my web site.
    Both river and lake flies.

One further thing l would add here is this. Trophy Browns found here on the White river system are probably the hardest of fish to catch for the reasons that they simply see way too much traffic and all manner of angler methods to catch them.

Fishing for those trophy browns when they are on spawing beds either pre or post spawn, there is no difference, is not a ethical way to justify a trophy in my book.
Same deal goes on around the hatchery outlets, no difference.

There are some guides here that choose to fish clients on fish at that time, the majority of which are foul hooked. It is also at that time l have seen the worst of behaviour between so called fly fishers.

Go nail a 10 fish at any other time and l will take my hat off to you, l know what it takes to catch them.

    Davy.
