Congratulations on landing that thing; Im sure it was a great battle. What did you fool the carp with? Do you catch them regularly? I spoke with a gentlemen from out west a few years back and he was the first to introduce me to the green weenie. Have you ever caught a carp on one of those? Also, when fishing for carp are you sighting them and then delivering a well placed cast? In my experience I have found carp to be very nervous fish and most of the time a cast sent to them in shallow water almost always results in an underwater stampede! I love the idea of hooking one of those with a fly rod and have only done it once... unintentionally. The fish was about 4lbs but I have seen some carp that must be pushing 20lbs and would love to pursue them.

- I caught that carp on a black rubber legged wooly bugger on a #6 tmc 2457. When weighted these hooks ride point up which is a good thing for carp. Carp will eat anything if they are hungry.
- Yes, I catch carp often because I target them. There aren't many trout streams in Pittsburgh.
- A green weenie is a nymph made out of chartreuse chenille. I don't fish them for carp, but I have caught trout on them.
- Yes, when I fish for carp, I am sight fishing to active feeders. If a carp isn't feeding then you will get the stampede you refer to. Carp fishing is about finding fish that are eating. 90% of the time I catch feeding carp in shallow water next to deep water they can easily escape to. Feeding carp make a mud cloud because they are rooting around for food. If you can quietly/slowly walk within range of a mudding carp, you have a pretty decent shot at catching it.
- Make your casts either next to a carp's tail or within a foot of its face. If you drop a fly near a feeding carp's tail, it will turn to see what happened and suck the fly up. If you cast in front of the carp it will swim over to suck up the fly.
- Wait until the carp has had a chance to suck up the fly, set the hook, and hold on.

That was an awesome summary Im totally psyched now Thanks Littlej81.......My younger bro lives in Pittsburgh, Ive gone out there to fish the Youghiogheny river with him. We did well in early July when the slate drakes are starting to emerge. I tied up some modified Zug Bugs that had lady amherst feather fibers running up the entire back of the nymph because the Isonychia bicolor have a white line up their backs. Then the thorax was rusty brown awesome possum. I still have 3 or 4 of em if youd like a picture. Thanks again on the carp breakdown!
