Trick or Treat anchor fly

I have been fascinated by the effectiveness of the Big Horn special for years. I have killed with this fly on many occasions working this steamer in the traditional way. This is not my tie but the only one I could find on the internet .



There are versions with yellow rubber legs that work better than this but you get the general idea. The Big Horn special is a baby brown trout imitation. I have been struggling for years to develop a version that will work as a euro - nymph anchor.Sometimes trout hit our larger larger anchor flies because they look like small fish. I caught many fish on patterns similar to this while euro-nymphing. I long line euro nymph these flies casting them either directly upstream or up an across. I fish them dead drift with a wrist flick at the end of the drift. I got this idea from Kelly Galloup's streamer video. He said that bait fish swim with the current 90% of the time . One logical conclusion from that statement is that it is possible to euro nymph large anchors as bait fish imitations in deep fast water . I have been doing that for a couple of years and I am slowly getting better at it.

TRICK OR TREAT


I have several variations to get to the final product but I thought I would share my work up to this point. This particular version looks seasonal so I named it Trick or Treat. I know the silhouette of this fly does not resemble a Brown Trout fry but it has the elements of color , light and motion that provoke strikes and it pushes water. I thought it might be fun to develop a fly on line . So if you are so inclined post your ideas.

I have. Theory that in the fall, flie that are the same color of the leaves get eaten. Yellows, reds, and browns work very well in the fall. I like the yellow and orange, maybe throw in a splash of olive for fun

Yeah a lot of guys do very well fishing the fall spawns with streamers early in the morning, and at dusk. Those colors are awesome and I'm sure really work well in current light conditions with the changing leaves and whatnot. The "Autumn Splendor" fly is another example of a streamer with all of those colors that guys really kill it with in the fall.

I find it really interesting that certain colors during certain seasons trigger more strikes. A good example is a couple of midge patterns that seem to work really well around here during winter. One of them is Charlie's Deep Blue Poision Tung, which is a small midge pattern of grey body, light blue rib, and ice dubbed grey or dun collar with silver bead. All of those colors to me really represent the winter shades that we see. The other pattern is the "CO Rockies" (referring to the baseball team) version of the Jujubee. Instead of the standard brown, black, or clear rib, they use two strands of purple super hair and one strand of blue. A very different spectrum of colors for that fly than normal, and somehow it really takes some fish during the winter months!
