Hey guys whats going on, I got the new Fly tyer magizen and the dronestone article caught my eye. I thought to my self this would be the perfect imitation for the esopus, so i decided to learn how to tie it. I got the emprodery floss but the directions in the magizen just don't make sense to me and i looked for a good video online but i cant find one. I was wondering if you guys could help me out and give me some pointers or know of any good videos. Your advice would be extremly helpful thank you for your time.

I'll be at the Fly Tying Symposium and would be glad to help you in person if you are still having difficulty by then. It will take you at least 50 flies before they start coming out nice. I used to make some really, for lack of a better word, horrible looking wovens before I made enough to get proficient at it.

When is the fly tying symposium? Didn't take me quite 50 to get them nice, do agree that practice makes perfect and everyone is different. Proper tension is the key and the other thing is clamp your vise to the table so it stays still.

Like Aaron says FFE, the wovens are deadly. I have good luck with green top and orange bottom one's in the Esopus. Tied myself up some Drones for the E but the conditions were exceptionally poor when I tried them out. Or maybe it was my Amber w/Gold flake legs scaring the fish?

I first started tying them w/o using bobbins and I must say that they come out cleaner and it is much easier to get a rythm with them. It's a lot of fun now trying out different color combinations for the various stoneflies/salmonflies/other bugs that these things can mimic. AND you can tie some lead in with a tungsten bead to make them sink like a rock! A couple rivers around here have big caddis larvae and cranefly larva that woven flies make a perfect imitation of... I like making the caddis grubs with a couple variations of green, with the darker color usually on top. Makes for a nice fly.

Anyone know of a good thread material to use to make a very smooth rounded back, like some of the woven flies I've seen in a few different places? I'm pretty sure its not the DMC embroidery floss, but a different weaving materal.

Its easier to tie a woven fly with yarn than floss. The floss slides around a lot. It might be a good idea to tie a few with yarn to get the hang of the weave. Remember to tie the lighter color in on the side nearest you.
