Don't the Regulations Require Barbless Hooks?

I know that we are all conservation oriented anglers and want the best for our coldwater fisheries. However, I saw some very disturbing things on the Farmington River in Connnecticut today. The first was a dead rainbow trout that was tangles up on a rock with a large barbed bait hook in its mouth. Now, [...]

You are 100% right on. Unless they start policing the TMA it's going to be like this.

They could generate so much revenue there with all of the fines.

There is talk of ending the survivor strain program. If they sent someone put for two weeks hammering everyone for using barbed hooks, they would have a surplus. The best part is that everyone that they would fine up there is able to pay the tickets.

no reason not to fish barbless, particularly with flies of any appreciable size and when regulations call for it, so i'm with you on that however in terms of catch and release fish mortality rates bait fishing is far and away the major issue at fault, not hook barbs...it's something like a 4% mortality rate for fly fishing (barbs or otherwise) vs. mid/high teens for lure fishing vs. something like high 30's/high 40's for bait fishing...CT makes me laugh that they take the intiative to set-up a "Trout Management Area" with "single hook barbless" and "catch and release" regulations, yet still allow a bunch of clowns come in and bait fish in the TMA when studies clearly showcase that almost 50% of the trout they catch are gonna die after they're put back in anyway

Amen brother! So sick of it. However its probably a matter of politics as Worm guys buy licenses and pay for the stocking, the state needs the funds......blah blah blah. It would be nice if the farmy went absolutely artificial, and held off on stocking for one year. That will never happen because the fishing would become too hard and people would get discouraged and stop buying license. If anybody on board wants to start a group like the "guardian angels." I am in. A small volunteer group that would go around and check regs and handout literature in a positive non confrontational way. The comfort zone is way too high on the farmy. People won't feel as comfy breaking the regs if "curtis Cwila" is liable to come by w his posse' of berets.

There is a local attitude in the NWC that fly Fisherman are basically city folks who come to use the river and that locals w the bait mantality are not interested in hearing it.

A few years back my buddy approached a coupla guys at ovation. Big mistake. He asked em what they had in the cooler and they almost kicked his ass. They left in a hurry. When my buddy went to his car, tires slashed. Certainly an isolated incident and not a reflection on the extremely friendly and gracious general population of the NWC, but it really doesn't pay to get too involved w confronting people. Call the hotline and stay clear. But a positive minded volunteer group would be very effective if the tone was about spreading info and non confrontational. justa few guys w literature on a sturday would go along way. People would feel a little embarassed if breaking regs and they would change their act if politely approached.

In Pennsyvania I have been approched man many times. License, barbs, etc..... I have been followed and observed from afar all alone Falling Spring before.

A huge prob in Pennsylvania is Amish poaching. They believe that the fish are put their by God for people to eat so they poach w a clean conscience regardless of regs. Alot of the spring creeks near Amish farms get pounded, sometimes by pitchforks. The people that work the cress farms take fish all the time by any means necessary w/o a second thought because the big ones are right there in front of em living in the amongst the cress, they are sitting ducks.

Wild trout fishing in the Adirondack Mountains at Adirondack Retreats may2009 part 3 If you love trout do not watch. ( skip to 4:00 and take a deep breath and practice your anger mngmnt skills). This guy is thumpin his chest and catching nice fish on every cast and advertising his trips into his vid camera. when he kills a fish he kinda explains it away as he tears the gills out with a hook that is obviuosly barbed. Hopefully Adirondack Wayne doesn't have any plans to hit the Farmington anytime soon.

even his dog can't watch. his dog is like "w.t.f" and pretends not to know him.

I think the guy in the video is missing a few inches on his tape measure, Those seventeen inch fish would only go fourteen/fifteen on the tape measures we use around here. Also, at the end of the vid., it looks as though he has a hammer sticking out of a cargo pocket, wtf is that for?

I hope that he stays within "native" range. I do know that he does offer fly fishing guided trips.

    Brough,

    Isn't he on NEFF??
