    Albright fly rods

    Folks:

I am looking at some Albright fly rods. They are having a year end sale. I wanted to get feedback from you folks on any experiences with them good, bad or indifferent. I am looking at rods for freshwater trout either 8ft 4-5 wt or small 7'6" 3wt.

    Awaiting your replies,

    Paddy

    Paddy-

I picked up a couple of the 7' 6" rods and reels to match just before christmas from albright for my 2 boys (7 and 4 years old) For the price point...they seem pretty good.

They were super fast with the shipping and there is a warranty behind them.

    Re: Albright fly rods

I've bought rods from them before. I have a GP 5/6 9' that I use as a backup rod, and at one time my primary streamer rod, I probably would not recommend it to other people as I think you would be better off spending a little more money for a used or discontinued mid-level rod. For the money I can't really complain too much though other than it being heavy and a 2 piece. I also have a 7'6" GP 3/4 that I use as my small stream/brook fishing rod. For that purpose I have no complaints at all. At that length weight is not an issue, and I can't really see needing to spend a lot of $ for what I use it for. I've read a lot of good reviews about the A-5 too. If you don't have a lot of $ to spend or are looking for a backup rod they are not bad.

I have one of their GPX models from a few years ago. Its a really good rod. Its in my basic rotation and I have a couple of higher priced 9ft 4's that I dont use. George Anderson does a full writeup and testing of a bunch of 9ft 5's it finishes in the middle of the group but not at all far behind the winners of the group. I think they are good good rods and the price of the A-5 cant be beat. Here is the writeup:
Heres the big surprise of the test. Well, its no surprise to me since I always knew that this Jim Murphy designed rod was a winner. These rods are built in Korea, which helps to keep the cost down. Jim has used top shelf, high modulus graphite to get the wonderful actions and light tips that make for a great casting tool.

If you look at the performance categories, youll see that this rod outperformed (by a wide margin) both the Orvis Zero Gravity and the Thomas and Thomas HE, both $640-$650 rods! Thats huge.

Along with that, the rod is a pleasant Winston green color, with decent hardware, cork and reel seat, and it does come with a cloth bag and hard case. This is also a 5-piece rod, rather than all the other rods in our test, which are 4 piece rods (with the exception of the Tom Morgan 2 pc.) So, on paper it shouldnt place as highly as it does in many categories since it has more sections, more ferrules etc to add weight and stiffness. Well, youll never think this is a five-piece rod when you put it in your hand. It feels like a two-piece!

Accuracy was outstanding, especially at short distance. We were all shaking our heads in amazement.
