Sage 99 Series

Hi Guys,

Great site. I have been lurking for a while and this is my first post. Im in the process of liquidating some
of my older rods to purchase a good Euro nymphing rod. Does anyone have any feedback (good or bad) on the newer 5wt Sage 99 rods? Im trying to decide between the zaxis or the 99's. Leaning toward the 99.

Hi there welcome to the site, Im no euro expert by far but I checked it out I would say its far to stiff. I think it would be a good rod to nymph large water with an indie though..

I have the 10ft 4wt Z-Axis for a nymph rod.

Rio Nymph WF4F line for weighted flys and SA Sharkskin WF4F for dry flys and emergers.

Ecellent 10-ft rod, very light weight and will cast long or short distances very nicely.

The rod will also double as a dry fly rod, great line control for drag free drifts.

This is the first 10ft rod that I find comfortable to cast all day. I also have a 10ft 5wt XP Sage that hardly get used anymore.

Previously I owned 10ft 4wt and 5wt RPL+ rods, several early Scott 10ft and they were too heavy.

If you are set on a SAGE I would go with the Z Axis 10 foot 4 weight. I owned one for a while. I really liked it. I also owned the 9.5" 4 weight as well. They both are good for fishing the weighted nymphs. I would go with the 10 footer if I had to make the choice. I agree with Walsh. The 99's are a bit stiff and unresponsive in the tip section.

Far from knocking Sage as l have used Sages rods for well over 20 years, and they do produce some fine tools at a price.

Why they chose to produce a 99 I fail to understand. It was at one time a length used for Bamboo rods !!!
l can see no difference between a 99 and a 10ft at the end of he day.


I am also of the same opinion, it is way to tip stiff for a so called 5wt rod, ok if you wish to cast long lines, as we all know for the most part we are fishing within 50ft or way less.
Not a rod l would choose for EU nymph techniques myself or for that matter general methods.
I would use it for deep water nymph when drift fishing and maybe streamers

I own a TCR 5wt, and that rod is a beast, not surprising that it will send a 5wt way over 100 ft.
ERN about 7 if the truth were known.

They will most definitely narrow my focus. I guess am guess I'm looking for the ultimate rod for both both indicator rigs and Euro nymphing. I fish now with a 9'5wt Sage VPS and Its OK for indicator fishing but I want the extra reach with a 10'. I will be taking another look at the 4wts. I have not purchased a new rod in some time and it seems like from what I read on this site is that the newer 4wt rods seem to have alot more backbone like a 5wt.

I trying to save some coin by just buying the blanks and having a buddy build it for me.
