    french leader and fly line

Have you noticed that your french long line leader system shreads the fly line its attatched to? After awhile you may as well throw it away. I use an evo #3 with my greys streamflex 10 ft 3 wt. I now have an extra spool which I am going to put backing on and fill up the rest with 20 lb mono. From there , leader sighter and tippet. "No mo Rio fo me!"

    Magnet,

I haven't found this to be a problem for myself.

Are you applying a haul while casting? A short, quick/hard haul will break down a fly line's coating significantly faster than a longer, smoother haul to provide that extra "umph" in turning over the long leaders. The quick exertion of power during a short, quick/hard haul will make the rod's guides dig into the line's coating more than usual.

Other than that, I would assume it is the coating on the line? I've been using the Cortland Western Drifter and Platinum lines over the last 4 years and haven't found them to wear out quickly by any means.

    Mike,
That cortland line is good. Its happening on the spool. When french long line nymphing my fly line doesn't get into the guides at all. It stays on the spool. I think what's happening is when fighting fish on the reel, slicing tension is imparted on the line by the mono. Also, the blood knot at the mono step down point gets caught in the guides. Then I impart shearing force on the fly line again by yanking or trying to shoot it through. I'm asking myself,"why have 70 dollar wt forward fly line which is basically used as backing. So dats my dillema in a nut shell. Thanks for your response Mike. By the way, that camera you are using just might be almost as good or even a tad better than my 200 dollar Cannon. Pretty decent pictures you are taking I must admit.

Go buy one if those $12 lines from Wal Mart, then you will not worry about your $70 line wear, truth is for most nymph fishing it is as good as a expensive line.
I often use only a 25ft section of level fly line, l see no reason for the taper it serves no purpose for EU style and most other nymph techniques.
Often as not l cut back the worn section of what was a full line worn out.

Thanks DW. By the way, I just bought some of your DW bug dub at UPCountry fly shop on the Farmington. That is some spiky looking material. I want to try it on Aaron's TPO dronestone.

    Magnet,

That makes sense! I can see that happening with fish being played on the reel.

The camera required a small loan to purchase. lol.

Re: french leader and fly line

One question on fly line life and wearing out.

Do you leave the reel/ line in you car/truck all summer?

Heat and direct sunlight will destroy a fly line much faster than wear and tear.
The coating deteriorates and give up very quickly when storred in a hot environment.

    Regards,
    FK

Re: french leader and fly line

That could be FK. I have a Honda Accord and I leave a !0 ft rod completely set up believe it or not. There is an opening in the rear seat which allows me to lay the rod from the trunk thru to the dash. I ride around with it in my car every where I go. The only time it comes out is when I am fishing or when I have some fat ass in the passenger seat. Ha Ha.
