Winter Trout Fishing

I'll be in the Westchester County Area of New York during the holidays and wanted to get some fishing in. I would normally fish the croton reservoir system, but as far as I know they are closed for the season. Can anyone recommend a river/stream that would be open during this time frame? Not limited to NY, could go to PA or CT, but unfamiliar with the water in both those states.

I'm not too sure about CT or PA...

In NY you're going to have to hit the no-kill river in the Catskill region.

Beaver Kill 1) from Sullivan County line (below Roscoe) downstream 2.5 miles to the old railroad trestle and 2) from one mile upstream to 1.6 miles downstream of iron bridge at Horton

Willowemoc Creek 1200 ft. above mouth of Elm Hollow Brook downstream 3.5 miles to second Route 17 Quickway bridge east of Roscoe


Down in NJ there are quite a bit of in northern streams, I'm not too sure what's your best bet. I've yet to do winter fishing in NJ.

Thanks for the info. So the catskills is the only place to go for winter fishing I take it.

In terms of trout in NY, yes. There is always the Salmon River up in Pulaski, NY for some steelhead. NJ at the Ken Lockwood Gorge, Houstonic, or Pequest in NJ (others can give you better info regarding these.)

Not sure how far you are willing to drive, but the Tioughnioga River in Cortland, NY is a great trout fishery. I would suggest the West Branch of the Tioughnioga. Easy access, plenty of trout, but it is not the most scenic stream since it runs within ear shot of Rt 81 and through a couple towns.

The EB of the Croton is open year round.

The EB of the Croton at Brewster is open all year, the EB of the Croton at Croton Falls is open April 1 - Oct 15. Diverting Reservoir is the dividing line.
