I've never fished PA and was thinking about hitting up the Little J early saturday morning. I was curious if 1) spawning is over 2) are there any online resources or flyshops near by that I can speak to someone and gain some more information?

From what my friends tell me the spawn is all done there. Call TCO fly shop George or Paul can steer you in the right direction. Fishing in the fall is usually off the hook! You should have a great time...
Nymphing with generic nymphs like PTs, hare's ears, green weenies, midges and eggs should all produce fish! I wish I could get out there but I have shows for the next two weekends![]()
Brenton:
- Talk to Alan Bright --- Spruce Creek Outfitters @ (814) 632-3071. His shop is at the concrete bridge in Spruce Creek, PA.
- You should kill there this weekend. I would use bead headed pheasant tails, scuds, czech nymphs, walt's worms, ants. Any decent generic nymph pattern is going to get you into fish.
- The Little Juniata fishes best in the morning. You need to get to the stream while it's still dark and get on the water right at day break. If it's sunny outside, the browns will shut down around 11am. If it's cloudy, then you should have good fishing the entire day.
- Regarding the spawn. I did not see much (if any) spawning activity from Spruce Creek upstream the first two miles or so.
- Definitely post some pictures, and let us know how you do.

Thanks alot guys! I was torn where to go, the N. Branch of the Potomac in MD or to PA. From what I hear western maryland flows are pretty low so this works out great! Never been to PA before, looking forward to it.
Got on the road at 4:30 AM to get to the Little J by day break. Missed being on the water before sunrise as I got lost! (Google maps fail)
It was slow nymphing all day, started at 8:30 and didn't get my first until 12. That could be because of the following 2 reasons, 1) I was fishing with my dog, who decided that swimming across the river is a good idea, 2) my nymphing skills suck. I'd say its the latter.
I tried all the things you guys suggested, BH PT, Tungsten BH HE, Greenie Weenie, streamers (olive and black leech patterns). I got my first brown on an egg pattern that I bought at spruce creek outfitters. Corrected my presentation a bit as well, when casting back up stream at the end of my drift I applied a reach cast to help present the fly better. Not sure if it was the change in pattern or presentation but it worked. Got 2 after 4 hours of fishing (2 hours without my dog)![]()
Brenton:
- Sounds like you had a good time.
- Definitely keep practicing on your nymphing skills. Both the Little Juniata and Spring Creek are made for nymph fishing.
