I headed to a river recently to do a little Euro-nymphing and I happened to run into Aaron. I said, " hows the nymphing today." and he said it was off the charts but that he was changing up. So I asked, "why change if you are getting fish?" He told me to take a look at the pool. I had an idea after his response what I was going to see as I took the one minute walk to the rivers edge. Yep, the fish were rising everywhere. Upon returning to the cars I said to him, " that's great but I didn't come prepared to fish dries." So he gave me a dry fly and a tapered leader and stressed the importance of being ready for an opportunity like this. For a moment I thought about testing his readiness by asking for a couple of soft hackles but I didn't want to push it.
Anyway, I thought I would convey this story to the forum. I watched that guy catch quite a few fish that evening in a manner I wouldn't have expected. Even I, with my less than adequate casting abilities, put some in the net. So I guess it's not just about Euro-nymphing. We all should be able to adapt to the prevailing conditions with a complete array of tactics.
Cheers,
Bob
