    Afternoon Euro-Nymphing

I am catching a lot of fish in the a.m Euro Nymphing but from noon on the fishing slows down for me. I am catching about one fish per hour in the p.m . I am using a 5x leader with a 6x dropper on the tippet ring . I also put on much smaller flies . Yesterday on the Farmington I picked up a few fish on a # 20 flashback pheasant tail. Is this the way it is or are there things I can do to improve my fishing in the p.m

Its normal for it to slow down around that time, especially with bright sun. Fish do not have eyelids so the sun affects them.

What I do is concentrate on real heavy/fast water, where the suns rays are broken up and do not penetrate through the water column as well. Also, look for shady areas. I believe that the trout really seek these types of zones out during the conditions that you described.

Give it a try and let me know!

Thanks Arron - I will try tomorrow. By the way I am having a great fishing season . Euro-Nymphing has increased fishing my skills and results. I am able to incorporate things I have learned over a lifetime of fly fishing into Euro- Nymphing. Every time I think I have Euro- Nymphing totally down I learn something new and realize I have a lot more to learn.

Yesterday was the first time that I gave Czech nymphing a real try. All I can say is that I am done "bobber" fishing. What an experience. It took a little while to get the drift down but once I did, it was fish after fish. Thanks to all on this site for all the info and tips. Now to get to the vise and tying some more anchors. I've always done pretty well indicator fishing, but I brought 10 fish to hand in just a couple hours. And some pigs to boot. Now I see what the hype is all about.

    wwelz,

I fished the farmington last saturday and came to the same conclusion you did the afternoon was much slower than the morning. However I fished the same spots today and found the exact opposite. The fishing was slow from 6-9 only got about 3 fish. But after 12 I started hooking the fish left and right. I fished the heaviest pocket water I could find and that's where I did the best.
