Cacoosing Creek and the best of Chubs.

After a long day of lawn work, I took off for the Cacoosing Creek. It is a small trib to the Tulpehocken and it runs through a small park in Spring Township (where I live). Anywho, they had a kiddy rodeo yesterday and I really didn't want to end my weekend end with a skunked day on the Tully yesterday, so I went.

I felt like I was making really good drifts with my nymphs but all I was catching was chubs. I really wanted to catch a big stupid stocked trout and no go. BUT (the point of the topic.) was I surprised when I landed a 10" wild brown trout. It is so nice to see some natural reproduction in a stream that is usually chalked up to be treated as a second rate put and take. (and, not to mention only 2 miles from my house.)

Stopped by the park yesterday afternoon to see what was happening. Several families fisng in the few good holes near the parking lot. Walked all the way to the bottom end of the park where the woods starts. Didn't see one trout with the exception of the couple pools by where I parked. Some of the people had left by the time I walked back to the car so I thought I'd give it a try. Started with a BH Caddis larva and caught one small (5 in.) wild brown under the foot bridge. Tried a Vladi worm thinking a stocker might like that. Nothing. Was just about to leave but decided to try a #16 BHPT nymph before I left. Caught one more small wild one and six stocked rainbows (nothing over 10 in.) in short order before I had to leave. What the real shame about the whole rodeo thing is that they put all those stockers in that tiny little creek and throngs of people come and catch the majority of them out in one or two days never to return until the next rodeo. In that breif period of time though, it's no telling how many of the stream's sparse population of wild browns get wiped out.One of the wild ones I caught had a piece of mono hanging out of it's mouth and I saw several other dead ones lying on the creek bottom. Who knows how many get taken home and eaten or thrown back in the bushes by people that either think they are chub or are just ticked off thinking that they are tiny trout that were stocked for the rodeo.

It is little gems like these that people; 1) don't know what they have and 2) what that stream really could be.

Under a little bit of education and regulation, that could be a nice year around fishery.
