Fished Quake Lake from about 10 till 3. The Callibaetis hatch was fairly light from what I heard the intensity can be. It was a great learning experience to say the least. I did not hammer the fish but I picked away at them the entire time that I was out there.
There was zero wind when I started and you could see the fish cruising around. The dry line was the best choice for when there was no wind. When the wind picked up the fishing did as well... or at least I thought. I made a mistake and fished out in some deeper water for about a half hour with only one take. I remembered what Davy told me about the wind and line control. Then I thought I had the midge tip with me! This saved the day! I hope I am correct in saying that the midge tip allowed me to keep my flies at the same depth as the dry line did in the windy conditions.
All of the trout were taken in shallow water, less than five feet in depth. It was like playing a video game! One amazing thing was that there was this one little area where it was a little deeper close to shore where I got at least 75 percent of my takes. I would drift by catch or hook one then come back around and do it again. It was neat. I learned a lot about shore line structure and even if there aren't visible things like points or visible weed beds look for changes in bottom color and the fish will be there. Also, after today I don't need to see actively feeding fish to know that they are there.
As for the fish species all were rainbows except for one Cutthroat. I didn't take pics of the fish due to fear of losing camera :
The magic fly was the Hare's Ear that Davy said would hammer them! All of the fish were caught on it.
Ennis Lake tomorrow!
Here was today's office .... can't beat it!
