Wyomissing Creek 4/30/08

The Tully looked a little high tonight, but I still needed my therapy (fishing) after an elementary school detention session, so took a look at Wyomissing Creek. I started off around 5PM doing what I usually do, a beadhead on a long leader, split shot, and a strike indicator. I changed out flies three or four times with no hits. Then I thought, let me try something different.

7ft leader, 3ft tippit, and three bugs; a size 18 brasssie, BH Pheasant tail, and BH caddis type bug, and no shot, I just used the weight of the flies. From 7PM-8PM I caught 5 beautiful wild brown trout. The smallest being around 6" and the lunker being about 10" BUT!!!

I caught the most fish within an hour ever. (I know most of you catch like 20 a minute or something.)
I could see the strikes very well. (Always hanging up before.)
And found a pretty cool stream. What a nice way to top off detention!

For you home gamers, I was in the park section which managed as a Class A Trout stream.

Good catch. Five fish in an hour is really good if you ask me! Did you fish a long section or a small area? Were there many people out? Any hatches?

No other humans, I saw some very small mayflies, but I do not know what they were. I do know they were not caddis, and they were not midges. (I need to study up on my bugs.) Also I know that there were fish rising to them. I could not get small enough to fool them.

It did surprise me how many fish there were in there!

I fished about a hundred yards. Beautiful stream very similar to the size of Valley Creek near Philly, but much more low vegetation to give your flies to the "tree gods".

Do you know of any really difficult streams in that area? Its not too far from me and I am looking for places to practice competitive type fishing. I am looking for low fish density and hard to catch! That's why I asked about the length of the section. I need about a 200 yard stretch of "brain surgery" type fishing.

That is so sweet. I know nothing about that stream but I think it is in the Landis book, I'll have to check it out.
How did you tie on the three flies? Droppers or bend to bend like a wet fly cast style?

Difficult fishing, low density... hmmm.... I have been in 9 local streams so far this year mostly because of proximity and the chance for wild or holdover trout. Two larger, lower density streams may be

Tulpehocken down stream of the Red Covered Bridge (warms up and trout killers clean it.)
Little Schuylkill in the section near Port Clinton (large and only stocked twice in season) Although I hear the water is getting better and there are some wild browns and holdover rainbows.

I used the tying method mentioned in the nymph discussion section with the large loop in the tipit and nipping the tags for the other bugs. I did also learn that my "supper nymphs" maybe a bit too heavy at least for small riffles.

I would like to try the method in a larger streams like French, Little Schuylkill, and Tully. (Tully frustrates me.)

Rocko - if you do check it out, let me know. I teach about 1 mile from there. I am embarrassed to admit I have never fished there before even though I drive over it every day.

aaron- you might want to try the gorge section of the brodhead. I think juice will attest to the fact that river offers a lot of different water with a relatively sparse population of quality trout. Not too far from you either. Be careful wading, its somewhat treacherous. Also, watch out for the homeless/sketchy characters that are sometimes down there. Its quite the hike in, so you won't be bothered by any other fishermen, but also not near any help. If you want to know how to get in there, let me know.
