    NOR-VICE

When i was at the Marlborough show saturday i saw the demo. of the NOR-VICE. I thouht it was pritty interesting. they even have an automatic bobbin.
Does any one on this site use one of these vice or bobbin if so what do you think of it? I noticed that none of the tiers at the show used one of them.

I have seen the demo before too. While the vice is nicely machined, I consider the back and forth spinning to be sort of a gimmick. For my needs anyway, I see no use for that functionality.

The fact that Norm Norlander, the maker of the vise, was the only one tying on it at the show tells you everything you need to know. He's a great showman though, makes using his vise look easy.

Jay "Fishy" Fulum uses the Nor Vise with midge jaws, he was at Marlboro.

The vise seems to be a Northwest item for tying, it is not traditional for Eastern FF.

I have one and use it mainly for buggers and wraping a base on longer hooks. It is like any tool with a learning curve.

I find the norvise to be very intriguing. As aaron and juice can attest, I suffer from the shakes, and the free spinning feature looks like it would make life easier for me.

    Re: NOR-VICE

I looked at this vise and it wasn't for me. You see I tye classic wet flies and Salmon patterns. When I want to do something else then it's classic streamers and of Course Traditional Catskill Dry flies. The vise far as quality appears sound. I just did not like the way it felt and did not like the feel. So I went with a Renzetti Master and have never been sorry and truly love the vise. Now far as vises go, you really need to go and look and touch all the vises that you might want to purchase. You may hate the Renzetti I love but love the Dyna King or a Regal or an HMH. It's really a personal issue. Just make sure that the vise that you do go with provides plenty of room for you hands to work and that hooks do not slip and no adjustments are needed to be made when going from hook to hook of the same size. There are a lot of good vises on the market and a few dogs. With vises, I do stress try it before you buy it.

The Renzetti Master is one of the best- I've seen many, many top tyers using it. Then again, for about $600 (last I knew), it ought to be damn good!

    Torrey:

I gotten mine this year. Mine I believe was around $645. I have been looking at this vise and a few others for a long time. Finally went to Cabelas in Hamburgh, PA and sat down in the fly shop with a Renzetti Master and a Dyna King Barracuda. The Barracuda is a nice vise and is less expensive then the Renzetti. When I again touched the Renzetti, I was content, no questions and felt perfectly happy and comfortable with the vise. I did put the vises to the test of hooks and adjustments. Both vises are top end and high quality. Lastly, it also came down to a looks issue as well. Remember that when you buy a vise you have to look at it every day in the tying room. Not to mention touch it and work with it on every fly. The Renzetti to me has a nicer appearance as well. So I bit the bullet after all these years and finally have one. Just simply love this vise. Now some of my friends have the Barracuda and just hate the Renzetti. Like I said, it all comes down to preferance. Sort of like a Ford VS Chevy thing. When I hear new tyers or more from the Intermediate stage that is ready for that up grade, they all act like it's a game. That my vise is top end or better than yours. A true tyer buys a vise that he can afford and feel comfortable at and just sits down and tyes with a big smile on their face because they are happy with their purchase. To me, that's what really matters. In closing, I still tye on a Thompson model A vise once in awhile. Boy can the vise and I turn out some quality wet flies. Now, isn't that all what really matters?
