Tiny water strider nymphs/larvae?

Look at these wierd looking things...they are shucks from tiny little water striders, this is the first time i have noticed these on a river. each shuck had 4 tails...which ruled out any mayflies. Then i noticed hundreds of very little water striders in the pool. in front of me..there were no tricos or midges anywhere to be found so i hypothesized that the shucks belonged to these little striders....i caught one and compared to the shucks on the rocks...was a perfect match! Anyone know if trout eat the nymphs?

I am sure they do, as long as they are stream born insects and not egg laying. I don't know enough about that insect to give you an exact answer. However, it's summer and the biomass of available food is less so I am sure that they do eat them... Well pretty sure!

I don't think trout mess with the adults that much though. Been on the water countless times, especially in really remote smaller streams, and watched the trout completely ignore the striders skittering around the edges of the stream/river. Im sure that they occasionally take a few of course but by and large, don't think its a major food source. The nymphs, however, may be an entirely different story.

Yeah I didnt think they messed with the adults...i had a hard time catching one and i was using a net haha. I believe this rainbow is a thermal stress victim, i found him semi-alive flipping around in the bottom of a pool...
