I have been working on landing my first trout on the fly. I've been given some good on the water casting and drifting help from a few you guys, and tons of valid trout fishing info in general from many others.
Today May 10, 2010 I came across my first two trout on the fly. I covered some water that I thought held fish and didn't get squat. I was starting to think there were no fish around. Just as I was going to say the heck with it, I run into WalshMiko. We spoke for a brief moment and within the next minute he was helping me out in a big way. He rigged me up on my rod and said you will get something, I watched him catch a few fish as I still remained troutless. I had a issue with my rig he handed me his rod and said go for it within a few minutes with his help I had my first trout on the fly, A few moments later I LDR'd on my second. It was AWESOME!!!!
Euro-Nymphing a tandem rig with a weighted Walts Worm and "insert other fly name here" was the method of choice. Both fish were rainbows in very shallow water (6 to 12 inches). I caught my first thinking I touched bottom. Thanks for the help Tom! I need to work on a few things (not getting snagged on the bottom, knots and casting) but I certainly have the motivation to do so now
Today's lessons learned: 1) Don't be afraid to set the hook harder. I now realize that I must have missed tons of fish in the past because of not setting the hook correctly. 2) Using a coiled indicator while nymphing is awesome! 3) Weighted nymphs make casting easier 4) having a really long leader isn't a bad thing (most of the time while I was casting my fly line never made it past my rod tip).
Nice job Tommy, I know your getting ready to get back out there to do some more damage!!!
Tpo is about helping people, via computer or stream and I wouldn't of been any help without the knowledge I learned from this site..
Thanks guys i can't wait until this weekend. I'm going to hit up some old water using this new to me technique.
I do have a couple of questions. What brand/type of line should I use for the setup. I know its heavy mono up top, and 5x flouro on the end. Any particular brand or type of mono? Also I read the original setup usually goes 20lb mono then 15lb mono. Whats the benefit of using both at the same time instead of just one?
sheisty.....most construct their leader from a stiff mono...like a maxima clear or chameleon. The stiffness helps with the cast. The two sizes (20# off the flyline then the 15#) give the leader somewhat of a taper which also helps casting. Good luck!...Jason
