Nymphing the Church Pool

I was wondering how many of you try to nymph the church pool on the farmington late in the year and are you successful? Lately I feel like if I hook a fish in the church pool it's by luck. Early in the year I can go in the fast water at the head of the pool and do o.k.! But as the year goes and the fish been wacked with everything under the sun I find it harder and harder to catch fish there. I feel like I should beable to come up with something that works there other than my one or two lucky ones. This time of year the fish stack, I would think if you find one there you'd be in for a treat. This time of year I get away from the fast water and as you move down where the water slows I've tried dry as an indicator with a dropper and come up empty. Gosh there so many fish in there it seems the right guy with the right set up would have a ball. Is it just me? Is fishing the middle and lower part of the church pool with nypmh's impossible? The church pool can make me feel like a total rookie!

There is some truth to the fact that those fish get hammered. However, on recent trips there I have only caught between 1 and 5 fish there myself. I would belive that the number s of fish in that location are far below what they were last year at this time. When the water cooled last year and the trout pooled up the fishing there was outstanding. So the real answer as to why you are not having much success there might be due to the shear numbers of fish. Are you fishing the seam below the bridge? The last time I was there there was a good hatch oof winter/summer caddis and maybe one or two fish rose. Last year there would be a few dozen rising to the same hatch in the same location and under far worse fishing conditions.


As to fishing the rest of the pool you might have luck with swinging streamers or very slowly stripping them due to the low water temperatures?

Oh, to be there right now! Last time there, I only caught 3. The fish did not seem to be "completely" in the winter holding areas. Only a couple fish were visibly taking the winter caddis. A week or so ago, the water temperatures were still in the high 30s. I am waiting for the water to fall to around 34 or 35. At that point, the trout simply have to be in the winter spots. If I can't get any then, I will also start wondering about the numbers of fish. Right now, I am already worrying the numbers are down.

Thanks Aaron and Alan always nice to get feed back from guys that know the river and nymphing better than myself!
Ya know if I didn't know the hole and know that it should have a high number of trout it wouldn't bug me. I always leave there thinking I fell a little short! Don't get me wrong I love the challenge but guess I needed to hear some others thoughts.
Well I have about two weeks off to hit the Farmington and the church pool hard and see if I can change up my results!
