When will a trout hit again???

After catching a nice breeder today, I was wondering if anybody knows when a trout will hit again after it was caught??? Will it hit a different pattern streamer the next day or a nymph? Or would it hit the same Woolly Bugger the next day if it's hungry??? Or will it be too stressed to eat that soon???

    Steve,

I have caught the same trout in a day numerous times. Many times I have had them take the same fly. It all depends on how long it takes the trout to calm down after the fight. Sometimes the trout is feeding as soon as one hour after being landed and occasionally I would venture to say that it might take until the next day. They have to slow their heart rate down. When this happens the fish go right back to eating. About what you can get them on, it all depends on what they are eating or what might grab their attention to draw a strike.

On the Pequest I landed the same trout 4 times in one day. The strange part is that the fight was similar all four times. I could not believe how quickly the trout would go back to feeding.

I was fishing with my buddy and I caught a fish that had some readily identifiable marks.

I remember saying to him that I should have taken a picture of the fish.

    Three hours later...

This was obviously a very fresh wound, and the fish had been caught earlier that day for sure.

    Same fly too.

Re: When will a trout hit again???

last memorial day my wife and I were fishing on the Blackberry and we both caught the same trout within an hour. This spot was at a bend in the river that is pretty deep and theres a beaver dam at the bend which makes it a tough spot to land fish.

Every year i fish this spot and end up losing a nice trout... Friday evening I went and was using a black wooly bugger with a few BBs to get it down. I let the fly get within a few inches of the brush and stripped it in. I lost this trout twice in one outing. My dad went back the next morning with a small barbless rooster tail and between the fish and the current it bent his hook and he lost it.

I went back that evening and first cast this time with a heavier tippet and landed this rainbow. I didn't measure it but I would say it was about 17 inches and it had a small scar on its tail. Quickly released it. I moved out of the spot and had my wife put on the same bugger same spot... About 10 minutes later she had a really nice trout on and lost it twice. I wasn't sure if it was the same fish or not but it was decent. We moved on to another pool and gave him time to relax. 30 minutes later we came back and sure enough she landed the same rainbow with the same scar.

I dont know the science behind it, but I can tell you that it was a hungry and aggressive rainbow trout that day...

If trout are actively feeding, I've caught them again within a half hour.

By buddy busted off a steelhead in fast water at the Salmon River in NY on 4# 4x Maxima, and I hooked it 5 mins later & landed it on 6# 2x Maxima. Lesson learned by my friend: don't fish 4x tippet for steelhead if you don't have too.

My personal record is a smallmouth bass caught by me 7x in one afternoon. Not a learner I guess.

If you caught allot of trout (stockies) out of one honey hole, would you fish it again the next day??? Or would you move on down the river and fish it again in a few days???

Trout are not that smart. If handled gently they will be caught several times a day in the same feeding lane with the same fly.

This is not true with higher developed fish like the LM, SM and others in the Sunfish family.

I have seen the easy to catch pond bluegills learn the fly pattern or time of day and completely turn off feeding when overfished for a few days.

My friend John landed the same trout three times in 20 minutes the other day. Mind you that this was a wild brown around 17 inches from the West Branch. They are supposed to be smarter!
