Use a short, stout leader of 0-2X. Cast across current and make short strips as it swings around.

Thanks for telling him that piece of advice! I didn't want to say it since its my site and all. However, with that being said he would get the most out of being shown what to do rather than being all over the place trying a ton of different things.
