What not try egg fly patterns? Sounds like they are making the berkley power bait stuff illegal.
Another incredible day above the Hatchery. Talk is they haven't stocked since spring of last year and from beat 27 and above, all fish caught are 19" and above. Every deep area has a few, and at beat 30 they are now stacked up in the shallow water.,where one has a wide area in which to play the fish. Caught and carefully released a 19 inch Brookie, 3 rainbows; 20, 21 and 22, 2 Browns, 22 and 221/2. The fish are extremely heavy and fight very well. Again, I used 4X because with 5X I would run into my backing and they would break the leader. I was not able to use my reel to fight the fish as they would suddenly take off and I had to strip in very quickly when they let up or I would be wrapped around semi -submerged vegetation. I took pics and now have to learn how to forward them.
The bad news is that if one reads the regulations for Connetquot, you will find: "Specifically prohibited are molded facsimiles or replicas of insects, earthworms, fish eggs, ect....so that ends the unbelieveable fishing for me at Connetquot and I know I am not the only one who used artificial fish eggs.because I found one in one of the Browns I caught. What a terrific learning experience to play those heavy brutes!!!!!!!!!!! I will return to fish with streamers and big nymphs.

Got Elsinore?
I am surprised that they made that regulation. It really does say no egg flies? I knew you could not use the plastic eggs or the glue gun eggs. What are they going to say next? I mean I have no problem using eggs there, even though its almost too easy. I don't think any fly fisherman goes there for the challenging fishing. They go there to "rack 'em up" or catch a truly big one. The Connetquot is what it is... a trout paradise. Are they going to make you fish with "pointless" hooks next???
BTW good job! Did you take a picture of the 19 inch Brook Trout?
these reports are making me crazy i cant wait to go there in june now

I'm not sure I understand, what CAN you use at the Connequot?
Thanks for the report, sounded like a great day, looking forward to the pics. Check out the recent post on directions to Photobucket so that you can post them easily.

Wishin I was Fishing: The only artificial egg pattern I know of is the fabric tied on a hook to resemble a trout egg. I don't think there is any leeway on what the regs say, but after Aarons comments, I will ask Gil, the Park Supt., and will let you know.
Aaron: Yes, I got a pic of the Brook Trout
Trout Fishing for Life: Don't wait till June, because as of 4/1/08, there will be 3 sessions a day and a two trout limit plus they are not stocking up there
Try to go ASAP during the week, Wed thru Friday.
Dave the Rave: I'm going to start using small artificial Leeches and will report on their success.
They have plastic eggs and they also have hot glue eggs. I think that this is what they are calling "molded Facsimiles". I am going to try to go the week before Easter. Did you see many fish or was it just one here and one there?
AT 27, just below the falls where I caught the big brown, his twin was alongside him as I played the fish. I lost a bigger fish there also when he shot downstream in the current and broke loose. At 28, the fish have been
worked over and there I lost another big fish who took me into the backing and broke the leader. At 30, they are spread out everywhere in the flats. Almost every cast got a hit there. From 28 and above , you will occasionly see a single fish cruising making a wake behind him. I sent some pics to Justin Massimo and will send more when they are posted.
The way that reg is written can be confusing, and in the past I wasn't sure if egg flies were legal there, but I can assure you they ARE. If you read closely, that reg is only prohibiting MOLDED flies & facsimiles- they also mention insects in that, and that would also eliminate the use of all nymphs if you interpret it told not allow egg FLIES. As long as they are "Tied" from yarn or a similar material, like Glo-Bugs, chenille eggs (Iliamna Pinky, etc.) or McFly foam eggs, you are fine. The confusing part is the way it says "molded facsimiles or replicas"- it should have been written "molded facsimiles/replicas", 'cuz that is what they mean. Otherwise you couldn't fish nymphs or San Juan worms there. Soooo.... no hot glue eggs, Trout Beads, Crazy Eggs, Mister Twisters, Power Worms, etc. Sorry Aaron, Lol.
Talewaters-
Try putting an egg on the head of your leach patterns.
