    Winter fishing the upper D

I understand from a couple of sources that the fishing can still be good all winter in the Gamelands on the West Branch and a little further down before it gets too cold. Has anyone ever tried it out? I think I may head up there and see about it.

If you have low water and a pretty warm day you can have decent fishing in the riffles. If you don't have those parts of the equation it will make for a tough day on the water.

That is not too far down for the dam effect to keep the water temp favorable is it? I'm not expecting a big hatch or anything, just some good riffle action on some nice browns.

I have been checking the flows lately and it has been over 2,000 cfs. However, the water temperatures have not been so bad. Its been around 40 degrees f everyday. The only drawback to the new flow plan is that when the reservoir is above 95 percent the release is 1,500 cfs. When it goes below 95 percent the release goes to 250 cfs. The great thing is that with both of these numbers the river will not freeze in the winter. Usually during the winter they cut the release to either 80 or 45 cfs and this allows the river to freeze and cause fish kills. If there are no fish kills this winter because of the increased releases the river will be the best it ever has next year.
