Glo Bugs, tying with yarn, and Troutbeads

In preparation for fall, I've began tying with glo bug yarn. I'm tying on size 12 and 14, and am having trouble having the "egg" look spherical. . .that is completely round. One out of every 3 or 4 that I tie look good, but that's after rotating the yarn (after I cut). Are there better ways to fix this problem? I feel like my glo bugs are not quite round enough.


Also, this brings up the question that I had about Troutbeads. Are these beads more reliable than yarn? I imagine a big benefit of the beads is the added weight.

Want round Glo-Bugs? Tie a few thousand and yours will look perfect. Practice, practice, practice.... I'll show you a trick or two next time you stop in the shop. And yes, the Troutbeads are deadly and often outproduce the traditional egg patterns. Nuff said....

Ive been tying for about 7year pushing 8... (laugh if you want to guys!)...

But I still cant tye a good egg....
so I tye flies that other guys dont have access to.. and trade for eggs... it works!!

Leonard, that's a great idea. The problem is, I may not have anything to trade with! lol

Since yesterday, I've been trying to blend the yarn within the shank, and then pinching tight and cutting short. They're getting rounder, but they still need major improvement. Then I've been "testing" by submerging them to see what they look like saturated. I'm anxious to get my hands on Troutbeads.

I really like that roo bug pattern, looks deadly. I want to hear more about these streamer patterns. . .

Try using McFlyFoam yarn for eggs, much easier to get round eggs with it.

McFly Foam is so easy to work with I feel like I'm cheating. It's definitely superior for tying micro eggs with no bald spots underneath. I still prefer regular Glo-Bug yarn for regular size patterns due to it's translucency and slight sheen though.

Dave, it's Justin up at the D with Aaron, you can come by my place and get some McFly Foam anytime you want. Ludlow and Stanton. I'll tie a few with you there and maybe I can help. It's the first fly I learned to tie. In only a year, I now know how to tie three different flies. I wish I spent less time fishing and more tying.

If you're planning to tie in quantity (planning to lose a big bunch of flies) you might consider the quicker pom pom option. They don't look as nice as Glo Bug yarn, but you can tie a dozen in about 15 minutes. I just thread them on the shank and add one drop of Zap-A-Gap. A myriad of colors and sizes are available at typical craft stores. The drawback is the lack of translucence and no (slight) pulsating movement at all. They also prevent you from crafting an egg with an "eye" dot in a contrasting color, but I suppose you could employ a magic marker if you wanted that.

Geez Alain, I dunno, I think I can tie a dozen Glo-bugs in 15 mins and I'm not the world's fastest tyer. Although I prob have tied about 5-10,000 of those in my lifetime- I used to guide in upstate NY for steelhead & salmon.
