    Aaron's American Angler Drift fishing article

    Hey guys;

    Just finished reading Aaron's article in A. Angler, May/June issue. Good read and very informative but I have a Question: What are some recommendations for Caddis Larva nymph patterns that are exclusive to Caddis pupa and also, some recommended caddis pupa patterns? To be honest, I never really paid much attention to the difference and fished the common caddis nymphs whenever I saw caddis activity on the water.

    Thanks,

    The only major difference is size and color for pupa. Bear in mind you have 3 stages.
    Pupa that are still in the pupating stage as a rule within a pupal case. Fish look for these at the river bed.
    The emergent stage when they swim to the surface. Fish will take these at any depth within from the river bed to the surface, typically look for shoal water below riffles and tail outs.
    The transitional stage to the adult. Almost always a surface feeding activity.

    The number 1 pupa for me that covers the ascending and transitional pupa is the SLF Trans caddis pupa, with and without a bead head. In sizes 12 to 18 in colors of. Tan/cream/insect green/orange/dark olive.
    I would back this fly on any water moving or still during caddis time and for that matter many others.

    Just remember the article focuses on behavioral drift and not hatching activity. For the majority of behavioral drift an olive caddis larva works well, tab can work at times. What's funny is that during hatching tan pupae far out produce olive and green where I fish. I am sure that's regional.

    Thanks for the kind words about the write up. I am glad it got you thinking!

    I have limited experience with caddis hatches but I agree with Aaron that tan is the best color. I fished Tan ,grey ,and chartreuse on my southern trip. Tan was by far the best but once in a while the fish wanted grey or chartreuse. I like this pattern its my version of Davy,s caddis

    That SLF pupa is a killer for sure. I have beat the $hit out of them with it. It looks real when wet.
