I learned a valuable lesson this week. I went out to a local stream this week to survey the damage done by the hurricane this fall. The stream was completely changed. A nice stonefly hatch was going on so I set up and fished a few spots as I hiked downstream. While doing so I must have dropped my favorite box. Starting to hate my Simms waist pack. The lost box was filled with all of my go to flies. I didn't realize until the next day while I was cleaning my truck. I went back and hiked the stream but I didn't find the box. Man I've be bummed out. I've actually had trouble sleeping. Started tying last night like a man possessed.
Just thought maybe sharing my grief would make me feel a little better. Oh well.... still bummed. Going on another recon mission tomorrow morning.
Yeah man. I dropped a box on the SBR when I realized it I looked up only to watch it start to go through the first heavy water. Brand new water proof box that floated like a cork. I was in the middle of a deep run that was fast water and hard wading. No way I would get to it.
that can give you that sinking feeling for sure...one of the many reasons I dont wear waistpacks is that you cant feel the gear...my vest has a feel and I would know right away if something was missing. small box and zinger/lanyard is a great idea...good luck
The C and F boxes have two places on the side opposite the clasp where you can attach a the zinger directly or use a piece of backing to make a larger loop. I attach the zinger there and the other end to my vest.
Thanks Frank - I wade deep like most euro nymphers . The water comes up into the pockets on the vest . When that happens the boxes float up and out of the pockets if I do not have them zipped shut. I cannot tell you the number of times I have looked down while wading deep fast water and noticed my fly box dangling at on the end of the zinger in the water.
