two sessions in now of casting 25' leaders with a sighter on a grey's ten foot three weight. i fished on nymphy spring creek water in wisconsin. not ideal for french nymphing, but still, it has a strong call to application here. it won't be my only tactic, but it'll be a super cool addition.
raking the water is major advantage. catching fish is great because i have two very young kids at home. getting away is one thing, but matching a hatch is another right now. hooray for he french style in that i get to fight trout right away.
here is were i'm flummoxed right now. i don't get the dropper tag system. i have fished double fly rigs new zeland style for two years now. it's been great except my dry fly occasionally gets beat up with the dropper tippet. the new dropper style with an orvis tippet or surgeon's knot has a big helicopter effect with the top fly going around the dropper tippet. to the point of it effecting the drift. i've been happy with my casting because the flies go where i want them to and i can haul into wind. but the dropper tag system has either unveiled something bad in my casting, or maybe everyone deals with the helicopter around the dropper tippet.
thanks for input here. until then, i went back to new zeland (tying to the bend of the hook), and it's been very good.
thanks for your participation into a great trout fishing site.
How come your leader is 25 feet? That's probably the main problem. In the DVD I go over making about an 8 foot butt section. You want 16-18 feet total. There are times for longer leaders, but but not often our fish are not pressured enough on average.
I have been holding my dropper tags at a 90 degree angle and then using a drop of uv knot sense to keep them out from the main leader and getting a great deal less wrap ups. works great
There are only 3 reasons why problems will occur when fishing droppers.
1. Leader system not built the right way.
2. Using heavy weight flies with light tippet dropper sections.
3. The most common cause is casting technique.
If you do it right you can fish with 6 flies, 5 as droppers and not tangle, until a hooked fish screws it up.
