Lower flows on Farmington

I thought I would share the information below that I found posted on another website.



"Farmington river flows will be dropping again. I just received an email from the MDC
Be advised that MDC has determined the need to further limit Riparian releases based on current conditions and available storage.

On Monday 8/16 release will be reduced from 125 cfs to 100 cfs consisting of 50 cfs Natural/50 cfs Riparian."

There are three entiies which control the water rights of the Farmington river. The MDC, the DEP and believe it or not, the Stanley Works Corperation. Its is cut in stone that they will always alow the volume of water entering the resevour from the Massachusetts side to be released. Thats the free flow. The MDC has to meet their water supply needs. Stanley works has the right to generate power at the Rainbow Dam power plant which is near the CT river. If you remember the flow was at 350 for an long stretch this year its because Stanley Works called for more water for power generation. Their agreement dates back to before the dams were built and before the 1955 flood. Now a days very little of Stanley works manufacturing is done here in Ct so what they do is sell the electricity back to the grid to make some money. Not a very noble usage purpose. Now the DEP over looks the situation and has the power to dictate what is done with the protection of the fish and wildlife in mind. So they wont alow anything harmful to be done to our fish and animals. Although they rarely have to intervene as the MDC is very concious of our needs as sportsmen and environmentalists. The only odd component to this arrangement is Stanley works. Their part in this dance is simply profit oriented as they dont need the power since their employees and manufacturing is all over seas . Much of the land we fish from is owned by the MDC who graciously alows us to use it. They have had a posative impact on our interests as fishermen.
