Water temps and what you are seeing as a result

Over the weekend we fished a stream in New York. The water temps were 41.5 in mid morning and 43.5 later in the afternoon. The fish were still pretty active once hooked with some leaps..When the fish were released they bolted away. They did seem to be more in the slower deeper margins but didn't seem to be lethargic at all. What are some of the temps you guys are seeing? Also, what is your impresion of how your temps are affecting trout behavior as of this point in the fall? How are your tactics adapting to what you are seeing?

The fish I've been after lately are slow. The takes I've had were noticeably soft and the fish were pretty lethargic coming to hand. Water temps were 42 and 43 on two different days around noon.


I don't know where you guys are finding the spunky trout.

SW Pa. Saturday 11/28 and there was 3" of snow on the ground and water temps. in the low 40s. I caught 8 rainbows. One was lethargic, but the rest fought and jumped like hell. A couple of the takes were soft though.

Sunday 11/29 air tempeture back up to 60. Water still only mid 40s at best. 16 inch rainbow slammed my #14 Copper John and fought for 20 minutes, leaping and diving like crazy. It was a beauty and revived quickly....

Sunday was a weird one. Some fish were very spunky and full of fight, while others were just plain lethargic. I did notice the the fish that I caught in fast water faught really well, while the fish hooked in slower water were not so exciting when hooked. I would say that some fish are getting into "winter mode," and others are still holding on in the fast water trying to actively feed.

Well I think after this week most fish will be into the winter sulk, I hear that we will be getting some snow later this week.. :'(
