    Indicators

In preparing for the season I have manufactured leaders a la Aaron and then turned to the indicators. So I reviewed the Video on "Indicators" and promptly got some Micron orange and proceed to make the indicators. The technique is interesting, but if you try it you need to get some proper sewing needles." Michael's" sells a brand of DMC Tapestry Needles size 20---these are ideal as you can thread the backing into the needle and with a rounded point, you don't stab yourself, and can slip the needle into the braid and make your indicators. Wow quick, cheap and dirty, I made 6 in fifteen minutes---and they work just great. 8) "Doc"

Ditto - made a bunch of long/short ones a few weeks back. The thing I had to work at was to get sufficient coverage around the micron of the black mark: when you wrap it round the dowel, don't do it too tight and leave space between the wraps, then when you brush over with the marker do it a bit forcefully such that you twist the micron over slightly - then you get marker color all round the line - just makes it neater
Likewise, can't wait to try them.

    Re: Indicators

Those are great suggestions, thanks. When I was making these a lot, I found a suitable needle in a Singer variety pack. I fished with Mike this past weekend and he was using the black-barred orange sighter and raved about its effectiveness for detecting light strikes. Remember if you are using these sighters at a distance (for long-lining), it will help to apply some Mucilin to them. The dacron backing soaks up water and becomes heavy, and the mass makes it harder to lift to sighter from the water after the cast. Since I am long-lining most of the time, I have actually gravitated back towards the monofilament sighter again.

I have said this before, when you get really good at these methods, you won't even need the sighter, since you will develop a knack for simply watching the leader as a whole. I think the bow in the leader is a great strike detection aid of itself, but in windy conditions, the sighter does help.

For the black barring, make sure you color the backing slowly, as this will allow the ink to bleed right through to the other side.

If you wrap the sighter on a shallow cone, your bars will go from fine to larger spacing, and this may also be helpful.

    Thanks again for the tips.

First post here, great site. Quick question, what is a sighter? Never heard of it before. Obviously some sort of indicator but what type?

    Re: Indicators

If you search the site, you will find lots of information about sighters. A sighter is basically an in-line piece of material (mono or backing) in a bright color that helps you detect strikes. It does not act like an indicator in the traditional way. Popular sighters are made from Golden Stren and Orange 20lb Dacron backing. Typical length is about 9in long. Some people use a marker to put black bars on them.
