    Ramapo River in NY

Went up the Ramapo River yesterday in NY - hooked 4 rainbows and landed 3 - the 4th came when I was sorting out a line mess and he took the worm hanging in the water - not often am I annoyed by catching a fish - then he jumped off... Success perhaps not worthy of usual posting - indeed only if you add them together do you reach a respectable size, but my first trip out this year and first fish on the Vladi worm too! tied on the 1870 Daiichi hook - killer stuff. Other 2 took a red serendipity type thing - red thread body, midge flash wing, brown dubbed thorax and silver t-bead on a curved nymph hook - I think #16 or #18. They ignored GRHEs, little stoneflies, black/pink midges etc. etc.
There for a few hours, and happily watched three bait boys come and go without any action. Then frostbite set in.
Big thanks to RubberLips for having given me detailed hints and tips on where to go - very much appreciated, and a great way to start the year! Cheers.
Roll on the Apr 25/26 clinic!

All were 8-10" in size... haven't yet perfected holding, rod, fish, net and camera all at once.

Good job John. There are a lot of little fish in there, but it's still fun to be out there whackin some fish! Where'd you hook into these guys?

In the deep pool just before the 87 underpass on East Village Road - the one you'd mentioned - fished both sides of the run - using the REALLY long leader tried a bit further up as well but too many trees around to get clear. Noticed on the train back that there were a bunch of guys on a flat section near the train between Tuxedo and Sloatsburg - seems just a few miles between the two stations so might walk down it next time...
    Cheers. JW

    Re: Ramapo River in NY

I just headed to that area (pool near the park, upstream of the pedestrian bridge) on Sunday evening (Thanks to the advice of RubberLips as well.) I was trying all dry flies because as soon as I got there they had just started rising. There had to be at least ten rises a minute for a decent amount of time. Most of the jumpers appeared to be only around 4-6". I had one grab, but missed the hook. The shore by the parking lot was a little awkward to cast far, and it was a quick and awkward drop-off (just ask my newly washed shirt, pants, socks, and wallet.) There was also some wildlife (a beaver and a few ducklings) on the other side so I didn't bother going there and disturbing them. I was only in hip-boots, but I just got my new chest waders in yesterday so I'm going to try some streamers out tomorrow early morning. I was throwing mostly light cahill.

    In short

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
