throat hackle

Guys,
I cannot, for the life of me, get partridge or whatever kind of hackle dispersed evenly around the head of a fly. I've bought books, looked at just about every possible web instructions, but I always, always, have a bare spot. Why, oh why, is this? Does anybody have the same problem? Is there a solution short of throwing all fly tying materials and equipment in a dumpster. Desperate in Newtown.

Sorry. I mean wet fly collar hackle, not throat hackle. Is there a difference?

Just a guess here but try flaring the fibers of the feather before wrapping it.

Its not easy. You can look up how to fold hackle-that can help. Also if you wrap the wet fly hackle first then add wing in you may get a bit better 360 degree dispersion.

Are you using hackle pliers? They make a huge difference.

Tie the hackle in perpendicular to the hook on top, with the shiny side (natural top side of hackle) facing forward. Pull the hackle up straight, while putting tension on it wet your fingers with siliva, and stroke the fibers back towards the tail. You should have the both sides of the hackle fibers facing the tail, and the spine forward. While keeping tension on hackle and pulling fibers back wind hackle around hook shank, just as any other fly finish it off. This is the way I was tought to tie, wets and streamers. It will give the hackle a natural rearward sweep and will also even it out around the fly. Works the same with saddle or partridge.
