scary news for the upper delaware

this is copied and pasted from www.catskillflies.com/stream.html

SERIOUS THREAT TO THE FISHING COMMUNITY-An article appeared in the Times Herald Record this past week and stated that mining interests (the Gas Drilling Industry) wishes to withdraw 1,000,000 (that's one million folks) gallons of water PER DAY from the East Branch River at Pea's Eddy. They wish to take the water, mix it with chemicals and force it into the ground to pump out the gas. The water would then be collected into large settlement basins. This plan would seriously damage the fishery and is such a serious concern that we all need to become involved in any way we can. Please contact all your friends and environmental organizations that you belong to in order to stop this plan in it's tracks. We can not afford a win-win situation.

Is there a serious chance of this happening? I will give Dennis a call this week when they are open. If so I will find e mail lists of people to "bother". The worst part is, if this were going to happen on the WB guys would be coming up there with tanks to stop it. Most people have little idea how migratory these trout are. It means nothing that the fish are in the WB during the summer. They could spawn in the EB or a trib of the EB in the fall and spend the winter and spring there. Is part of this an increased base flow to accomodate for the taking of water? Is the water that is to be drawn out going to be put back into the EB? If so is there going to be a filtration plant?

Who is going to make money from this? And what is their motivation. ie, how much do they stand to make?

Hi Talewaters...not sure if you remember me (Walter)...I met you a few months ago on the Housy below the TMA....I gave you the thingamabobber and you subsequently nailed a nice 20" rainbow (not that I take any credit...!)....on a #20 flashback pheasant tail if I recall. I never met Ron Urban personally - but his Niece literally sits right next to me in my office at work.....he of course heads NY's Trout unlimted. I've corresponded with him through her on one occasion....giving him a "Fly selection" article i thought he would find interesting - and he actually made me up a small flybox with some nice looking flies he tied. Anyway....there is only one Catskills in this world - I hope they don't screw the watersheds up anymore.

One million gallons per day is only 1.55 cfs. I'd be a lot more concerned about the possibility of toxic chemicals getting back into the river than that amount of water taken out.

    > The problem is not only with this stupidity but the draw downs that Ed Rendell Gov PA and John Corzine Gove NJ, and the dummy in NY are in cahoots (Demorat Buddies) as well to affect the flows. Where our problem lies on the WB is the summer failure to keep the temps down and the water up to a good level. The loss of the Rainbows on the Delaware East and West Branch is another serious problem. When the Beaverkill and Willowemoc are too low and too warm to fish the WB has always been the place to go---now I am afraid we will lose that as well in the August heat and lack of rain in the area. Amazing how fast the Pols are to rape the environment and how sl--o-o-o-o-o-w they are to understand only when it is too late. I guess the next road to travel is when they emulate the Gun Control whackos and we will have the "Tree Huggers Against Fishing" campaign.
