Re: lost fly box
I feel your pain! I have lost a few fly boxes over the years.
I use the Umpqua Pro Guide Boxes because they float no matter what. It helps you find it after losing it. You can get them in orange, which is easy to see!

Re: lost fly box
It hurts deep down.I didn't even wanna look at a fly vice or any fly tying materials for a few days. Now i put my name and number on all my fly boxs. Oh well well it looks like ill be busy over the winter tying to make up for the lost flies.

Re: lost fly box
You have to go above Broad Street Hollow to find better water. I got no love at any of my spots below Phonecia. Got a little above the portal but I think your best bet is to chase them up in Big Indian.

Re: lost fly box
Sorry to hear about your lost fly box. I had the same problem last year. I would place my boxes in the lower horizontal pockets of my Simms vest then wade out in deep water without fastening the zippers . When I reached the right depth the box would pop out and float away. I solved the problem by attaching zingers to my big fly boxes. They still pop out because I am to lazy to close the zippers but they don't go far.

wwelz;
What you described I've done several timesmyself in the past!! Got sick of watching my boxes float away cause I was too much in a damn hurry to make sure my vest pocket was zipped up after changing flies! I still do it occasionally but seem to at least half zip it now so they don't float away! ;)

Re: lost fly box
wwelz thats a good idea i think i may do that to my flox boxs now. I know what you guys are talking about i constantly forget to zip up my fly vest. The worst is when your phone is in one of those unzippered fly pockets.

Re: lost fly box
I have solved the phone problem by using the waterproof tec bag that Simms sells. I bought the bag at upcountry for less than twenty bucks. All the phone controls are accessible from the bag . The bag takes up very little room. I have participated in twenty person phone conferences from the middle of many rivers. My daughter recently took the bag on a hiking trip through Europe. She stored her cell phone , passport, and wallet in the bag.
I don't take my phone. That way when someone calls I don't have to answer it. Isn't that why you went fishing in the first place?
I know I'm an ass, but its the truth.

Re: lost fly box
Like others, I feel your pain. I have lost two boxes to the Frying Pan River over the years. One incident involved a well known and popular guide accidentally dropping a fully filled box into the icy flows. The other involved me being startled by a Rottweiler that wandered to the river from its nearby home. Freaked me out, totally. Dropped a box of show quality flies from tyers like A.K. Best, Rene Harrop, Mike Lawson, Jay Buckner and several other legendary tyers. I had tied a half dozen or so No Hackles and unfortunately placed them in my beautiful box of flies on a whim. While fishin' out a BWO No Hackle, the Rottweiler growled, barked and I literally threw the box into the air and off it went, down river.

Re: lost fly box
Yup lost several boxes over the years. One was stolen out of my car and was the nicest box I ever had...a 32 compartment wheatley...that was a gift and I miss it still to this day.
Ive fumbled twice in my career...one was my primary nymph box...fumbled it on the Madison about 5 years ago...lost several hundred nymphs...
I just lost...another one...it was a box of big anchor flys and stonefly nymphs...that went floating down the South Platte last sunday...I did write my name and number on the box but havent heard anything...its a bummer but not all that many flies I dont mind retying but i dont feel like buying another box..
