Braved the cold and high winds and went out to the Farmington today. Landed 5 browns all around 12 inches give or take. 3 on a brown and gold polish woven size 14 and 2 on a cadis larva size 18.
All in all a good day,hey beats going to work!

What was really cool is I have only been to this river once before.
I stopped by the flyshop and picked up the book on the Farmington. I think I ended up at Drive in pool or there abouts. I watch the videos of you guys tying flies and also watch Aaron's video on fishing in High flow water. So I went off with my indicator set up to try this stuff out.
After hours of trying to tie flies and many many flies that get put in a shoe box that ended up not fishable, I took a handfull of them to the river to try them out also.
I was astonished that I actually caught all the fish on the flies that I tied!! I think the fish were really hungry that day....or partially blind!
Oh I got tangled up and snagged on the bottom alot but what an amazing day for me. Just goes to show how a novice can learn from this awsome forum and incredible videos you guys put out. Thanks to everyone who answers my goofy questrions!

I still say the old timer put us NY boys in the wrong area as the first spot we found produced almost all the fish in the first hour or so..Yea I bet he's still giggling to himself ;)

If its the old timer i think it was I'm sure he tried to put you guys on the fish. Trust Esopus Guy, Trust! ;) Now if it was me that you asked where you should start, I might have put you in the slow water above the Collinsville Dam! :)

No,I'm just messin around. It was me I'm shure as I am used to much faster water on my home river (Esopus Creek)focusing on the seams and pockets mostly which is where we found the first couple fish. The Farmington is a bit wider than I'm used to as well. So with that said let's say I was in one of those monster dry fly pools at 800cfs, What's your guys plan of attack in the winter in such an area. No winter fishing in the Cats for the most part so this is a new game for me aside from chasing the Steelies. Thanks guys..

Check out the post on hooks. I remember way back when I was a kid. We used to get a red and white bobber, any old hook and a worm and catch trout all day. How things have changed!!! Or did they?

esopus, your best bet is to indi nymph the heads of the big "dry fly" pools. stoneflies, brassies, caddis larva are good choices. if you are looking to fish dries watch how the guys at church pool fish the winter caddis.

Thanks Craig. Well at least I was doing right as far as that goes . 30 mph wind and snow devils blowing around determined what slots and seams you could reach and forget about any big mends and good dead drifts(biggest prob i'm shure). 8) thanks

You can slowly fish streamers on those pools. Craig offered the same advice I'd give you. Heads of pools, and not just the ones in the TMA.
