Went fishing in my backyard for about 45 minutes with my wife tonight and actually caught something worth mentioning. I know some of you guys read my blog, and probably have seen the pictures of the 9 or 10 inch fish that i've been catching back there.(and the 4 or 5 inch wild brookies!) Well this one was a nice surprise when I pulled him out of the riffles to say the least! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3577/...188e345a_b.jpg
I caught it on a size 22 white tail midge that I tied on a barbless tiemco. I've got to say, I'm really impressed with the holding power of these barbless hooks! Ever since I learned to euro nymph with these lighter flies, my catch rate is really going up.

Re: Backyard Brown
Those little midges might be the trick in my backyard as well. I've been using small BH pheasant tails with some success. Keep posting pics of those beauties. I am curious, what size tippet are you using?

When I got my fish at the LL a spin guy told me it was the first fish he saw caught all day. I just smiled...

Re: Backyard Brown
You're about 5 hours away from me. Maybe I'll go camping some up there sometime this summer. What time is best for those fattys.

Re: Backyard Brown
May to the end of June is real good in that one river I have all the pics of. In Lake Champlain the bass fishing is always good except for August because of the summer heat. The fish go real deep.

Re: Backyard Brown
It's only good for trout after they stock it. It holds some good smallies through the summer though. It definitely helps with a bad day at work, thats for sure ;D

Re: Backyard Brown
Do you ever snorkel that river in the summer to see if any of the trout are holding over?

Re: Backyard Brown
I've never snorkeled, period. I've seen trout in there in August before. The number of holdovers is probably about 1 or less per mile though. If we dont get good rains, Im sure most the trout would die. The water gets pretty warm in the summer.
On another note, I caught 11 small ones in 2.5 hours today.

Re: Backyard Brown
You have never snorkeled? Its a great way to cool off and learn the rivers you fish.

Re: Backyard Brown
I'd snorkel the Delaware but I am too afraid of what I'd see down there. Seriously though, there are some nasty undertows where I am at caused by underwater waterfalls. People drown here every here. They get caught up in it, panic sets in and then it s too late. I don't even swim in the Delaware.

Re: Backyard Brown
The Huntington river is the same way. It has a gorge area that people swim in during high water and drowned. Something like 20 people have died there in the past 50 years.
