Re: Fishless in butzville
It's great that you got out today, in spite of the cold! Regarding the indicator, you might want to treat your yarn with Mucilin to make it more waterproof, or consider using a Thingamabobber which won't freeze.
Re: Fishless in butzville
Thanks for the tip. I cleaned the ice off that thing about 50 times, all that ice accumulated on the walk back to the car. I had some thingamabobbers in my chest pack too, oh well, live and learn.
I wouldn't have even mentioned the cold and ice had I caught a fish. :D
Re: Fishless in butzville
Maybe Sunday if I am back from the Salmon River. I will be fishing up here for the next few days. I am floating the river with my great friend Kevin Davis. Check his site out www.catchthedrift.com for some serious fish porn!
Re: Fishless in butzville
I miss those woods i use to hunt and fish up there ,try going down the road away from the hatchery and look around down that way you might be suprised what you find . im still not telling all the spots to go though they are mine all mine and you cant have them ;D
Re: Fishless in butzville
I found a few cool spots to enter the river at from pequest road, i had to hike through some woods, but the land wasn't posted so i'm guessing that was alright. It put me in the river about a mile or so down from the hatchery. On the way home i saw a few good spots to park and walk to the river along 46. I plan on going again this weekend, maybe saturday and sunday. I hate going to a new river and not catching fish.
Re: Fishless in butzville
Id say nymph fishing is the key there ,if the water is high ,There are big fish in that river you just have to move slow and fish the pockets ,and you have to get under he brush ! streamers are good to ,remember to fsh a hole a few times dont just go ripping from spot to spot the bite is slow this time of year . If the sun is out try a griffiths gnat if you see fish rising ,size 22 is good !
Also forget the indicator try fishing free style ,and try to feel the bite . I think a yeloow stren chezch indicator might work better this time of year if you arent use to not having an SI on . Stone fly or caddis nymphs would work good at this time of year.
Re: Fishless in butzville
thanks for the tips.
the woven nymph i was using was green, probably a pretty good imitation of a caddis nymph.
the wife wont be attending this weekend, so i wont have to worry about keeping her out of the trees and tying on new flies. I'll tie up some of those rubber leg stones for my anchor fly this time and see if they bring any luck.
Re: Fishless in butzville
try making the caddis bodies yellow ,that is one of there natural colors ,it has been forever since i fished the pequest at this time of year I like it though ,not so many people ,sring time kind sucks there unless you go on a rainy day .Most guys are wimps ,with the weather there .That fly that Aaron is using is basiclyy a pheasent tail with a bead that is always a good go to fly in general you need to weight the buggers in this high water and fish the banks next to the holes .If the water is high they will be next to the bank or behingd rocks in the deep on the bottom .
Cast up strem and across and give a bit of slack line then mend easy ,and follow the line through the drift .I sometimes like to through some slack just after i get through a hole to make the drift a bit longer in high water so i can fish the bank im standing on .
Keep your stick high through the drift ,it will help you detect bites better ,but you need a bit of slack in the hight water to help let the nymphs sink . Dont throw to much slack ,and only mend as needed when you mend you dont want to move the nymph ,the mend is just to pull the slack belly off the top water to eliminate drag. so remember ,slack line mend then follow then mend or olace the line gently up stream so as not to move the tippet ,and follow the line with your rod tip high throughout the drift .
Oh and get rid of the indicator ,the less you have to mess with things at this time of year the better !
