Good fishing - new flies and locations
Visited one of my favorite rivers today with the intent of exploring some new water and trying some new flies. I am happy to report that both avenues of exploration were successful! Fishing was good, but not great. I hooked 6 and landed 4, 3 of which are pictured below.
The winter caddis and larger tan caddis were out in force today and many smaller fish were taking them near the rocky shorelines. Strange that I was unable to deceive any fish with my larva imitations. I bushwhacked and explored some strange reaches and found this guy:

This is the very definition of a 19in male emaciated by the rigors of spawning. He fought well however and I am sure he will regain his girth unless we have a brutally cold winter. A 100 yards upstream I also caught a large twin female, but that one got off the hook.
Later on I went out in search of trophy rainbows. I found two and both were strong and acrobatic, leaping and cartwheeling. The second one actually zipped through my legs at one point! The first was an 18in fish:

and the second really fat and about 16in

You will notice how the first rainbow's mouth is beat up. I hope these fishermen are using small barbless hooks!

Finally, this river feeds its waterfowl like no other:

Re: Good fishing - new flies and locations
I can't believe that those guys with the egg sacks can't even pick up after themselves... what pigs. I have no problem with guys fishing bait legally, but I do have a problem with slobs like that.
I wonder what those birds are eating! It looks like a bunch of humans took a crap there! :o
That first brown looks mean.
Re: Good fishing - new flies and locations
Those mergansers eat tons of salmon!
Re: Good fishing - new flies and locations
Why do you ask? The Brodin Pere Marquette is 33" overall, 15"x 20" opening.
Re: Good fishing - new flies and locations
Kierran,
Your crew should all have nets like that for the big fish you guys get! A net like that ensures it not getting loose!
Re: Good fishing - new flies and locations
Aaron, that net ain't large enough for White river Browns !!!
Davy
Re: Good fishing - new flies and locations
It barely handles the 10 pounder i got at home. Actually, I like the thought of having the need for a bigger net. I will get one of those big bastards down by you someday!
Re: Good fishing - new flies and locations
Aaron did you catch that 10 pounder on your 4 or 5 weight? curious...
Re: Good fishing - new flies and locations
Got it on the 5 weight. It barely had enough lifting power to get it into the net!
Re: Good fishing - new flies and locations
Aaron ,I could make you a new net ,just give me the dimensions and Ill make the form for it ,it will cost you ,but I can make you a custom net ! if you want to see some pics I could send you a few .I cant seem to get things to post on here .Whats the secret ?
