Which vise do you use?

Hey guys- Wanted to see what vises you own, which you use the most, and which vise you started on. I'd set up a poll, but there are so many vises out there, it didn't seem practical.

Like most guys I started on a Thompson A vise, that was back in the 1970's when I first got into fly fishing.

Now I use a Montana Mongoose made by Griffin. It is a great vise, used alot of other people's vises over the years, but the Mongoose is my favorite!

We had this question before and i will endorse the mongoose again. Griffin makes great products for the money.

I currently use a Regal and also a Thompson that has midge jaws. I most likely will be buying either a Dynaking or Renzetti this fall.

I started with a Thomson too...


I now have 2 thomsons.. a HMH.. and the one I use the most a Griffin Oddessy spider..

I started on a Herter's and then used a Thompson. Used many others too. I had this vise built to my specs 4 years ago and have never been happier:

That's a sweet looking machine.

I own three, a Thompson Pro with regular and midge jaws, a Regal rotary (not true rotary) and a Dyna-King Jr. Trekker. They each have their uses, the Thompson is my "travel" vise, the Regal is my big streamer/hair spinning vise and the Dyna-King is my everyday vise. It took me a little while to get accustomed to the Dyna King after using the Regal for so long, but now I love it. Looking at the underside of your flies with a true rotary is really helpful.

I have had pretty good luck with the "on-line fly store vise" What I really liked about it is that there was not much of a learning curve. Lol.

My name is FK and I am a vise junkie.

I started with a kit in a cartboard box, the vise was two pieces of sheet metal and a lever clamp.

My next attempt a upgrading was a classic Thompson, another poor quality tool. The cam lever pin would break several times a year and it was poor at holding hooks.

I then became interested in Saltwater flies,,,,,could no afford a new vise, so I took and 2x4 block of wood, clamped a Vise-Grip to it with a radiator hose clamp,,,this work great for several years for larger 34007 type hooks.

Years ago, Eric Lieser talked me into a Xuron vise,,,,another POS idea.

I purchased the first prototype Regal rotary for larger hooks,,,,,did not like the desing and traded it off for something else.

Finally I discovered Bill Hunter in New Hampshire and purchase one of his early designs (1978) HMH Standard vises with several jaws. Excellent tool, it served me well for many years.

Next I discovered rotary tying and made a deal for a Renzetti Master,,,,,never looked back with regret,,,,sold off all the earlier vises. My all time favorite tool for fly tying.

Large saltwater flies are more comfortable with the DynaKing jaw design, I purchased a Professional model and later sold it off for a Baracudda.

Almost forgot the Norlander vise, very neat tool for bugger bodies, long streamer hooks and wire dubbing brushes.

Tube flies,,,,,tried the Renzetti and the KRFT little clamp that fits in the vise jaws,,,,,then a good friend sold me his DynaKing Tube Vise 2000 model and the rest are for sale.

I've got a Peak rotary with pedestal base. Also have the midge jaws. Meets or exceeds my ability. I'm considering getting a parachute attachment to facilitate my chutes. If I get that then I'll have to start fishing drys which I tend to avoid. Toodles,Frogge.

I have a few I use for different things. For Catskill dry flys, the Dynaking Professional is nice, and I bought a Renzetti Master for big stuff. My favorite of all is a H.L. Leonard "Catskill" vise, very simple design with a C clamp, very nostalgic too. CJ
